Winter Pipe Protection Checklist

48 hours before the freeze

Check the forecast carefully — a single overnight dip under 28°F can cause real damage. The earlier you prep, the less you'll worry.

• Confirm freeze-protection setting on your automation panel (or set pump timer to run continuously)
• Insulate any above-ground plumbing exposure with foam wrap
• Top off water level to mid-tile so skimmers stay submerged
• Move robotic cleaners indoors
• Cap any unused returns
• Test pump motor for a clean start

During the freeze event

When temperatures drop, moving water is your best friend. Frozen water in a stationary pipe expands and cracks the line — moving water resists freezing far longer.

• Run pump continuously at 50% RPM or higher
• Open all valves to circulate every line
• Cover skimmer baskets to slow heat loss
• Confirm chlorine production from salt cell or feeder
• If power goes out: keep pool covered and call us immediately for emergency assistance

After the freeze

Even with perfect prep, inspect everything once temperatures rise.

• Walk the perimeter and inspect tile and coping for cracks
• Check plumbing for visible damage or wet spots in adjacent soil
• Run pump and listen for unusual cavitation or vibration
• Test water chemistry — pH and chlorine often need adjusting after a freeze
• Schedule a professional inspection if any concern remains
