7.2 to 7.8 is the APSP and CDC-recommended range. We aim for 7.4 to 7.6 because that's where chlorine works most efficiently and where you'll feel the least irritation on skin and eyes.
Almost always cyanuric acid (stabilizer) is too high, or phosphates have built up enough that algae outpace your chlorine. We solve both with a proper drain-and-dilute plus phosphate remover — usually within 5 to 7 days.
