North Texas freezes wrecked thousands of pools in 2021. They will again.
North Texas brings its own variables: oak pollen for six weeks, calcium-rich source water, sub-freezing nights every winter, and summers that crank chemistry usage. The advice below is calibrated for those realities, not a generic national pool blog.
The 9-step freeze protocol
- Run pumps continuously below 32°F
- Open all valves to circulate every line
- Confirm freeze sensor on automation
- Insulate exposed plumbing
- Drop water level 4–6" if storm forecast
- Cover skimmer baskets to slow heat loss
- Cap unused returns
- Move pool cleaners indoors
- Pre-stage repair parts for the rebound
We automate steps 1–3 for every customer with freeze protection turned on.
