Green water happens fast and seems impossible to fix. The right protocol turns the worst pools clear in 5–7 days without draining.
If you live in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex, you already know that pool ownership isn't passive. Pollen, hard water, heat, and the occasional freeze make even a "low-maintenance" pool a real piece of equipment. Green pool recovery is one of the most common questions we hear, and the right answer changes the day-to-day experience of owning a pool.
The 4-phase recovery
- Filter the pool 24/7. Algae cleared chemically must be physically removed.
- Crush the algae with cal-hypo shock at 3× normal dose, repeated 24 hours later if needed.
- Remove the food source — phosphates and stabilizer. Phosphate remover bringing levels below 100 ppb is the single biggest factor in keeping pools clear after recovery.
- Polish the water with a flocculant or clarifier, then vacuum to waste.
Common mistakes
- Adding more chlorine without lowering CYA first
- Brushing before shocking (releases more spores)
- Backwashing before the second shock (kills filter biology)
- Stopping treatment as soon as the water turns blue (algae is hiding in the lines)
