How to clean a cartridge filter properly

How do you open a cartridge filter safely?

Pump off at the breaker or the switch, not just at the timer. Then open the air relief valve on top of the filter and wait until it stops hissing and water dribbles out. A filter housing under pressure can throw a clamp band and a lid with genuine force, and people have been badly hurt by exactly this.

Then loosen the clamp band or the lock ring slowly and watch it. If there is any resistance or any sound of pressure, stop and go back to the relief valve.

Then lift the lid off straight up rather than levering it, and note how the cartridge or the cartridge set sits. On a multi cartridge system, take a photo before you disturb anything. The order and orientation matter on reassembly and nobody remembers it an hour later.

What is the right way to rinse the pleats?

A garden hose with a fan or shower nozzle, held at a slight angle so the water gets down into the pleat rather than skating over the top. Work top to bottom in overlapping passes, then rotate and repeat, and take the time to do the whole circumference. A rushed rinse only cleans the outer surface of the pleat tips.

Do not use a pressure washer. It is faster and it drives grit deeper into the fabric while cutting the fibers, and a cartridge that has been pressure washed a few times stops filtering fine particles long before it looks worn out.

Do not use a stiff brush on the media either. Brushing frays the fabric. If a rinse will not shift what is in there, the answer is a soak, not more force.

And rinse into somewhere sensible. What comes off a season worth of cartridge is not something you want going down the driveway into a storm drain, and in a lot of these cities that is a rule rather than a preference.

Why does degreasing have to happen before acid?

Because acid dissolves calcium, and it does nothing helpful to oils. If you acid soak a cartridge that is loaded with sunscreen, body oils and lotion, the acid seals that oily layer into the fabric and you end up with a cartridge that looks clean and filters badly for the rest of its life.

So the order is: rinse, then degrease, then rinse again, then acid soak only if there is genuine calcium scale, then rinse thoroughly one more time. Never the other way around.

For the degreasing step, a dedicated cartridge cleaner or a trisodium phosphate solution both work. Soak overnight, then rinse. If the water goes brown and greasy, you needed it.

For the acid step, a heavily diluted solution, always acid into water and never the reverse, and only long enough to stop the fizzing. Acid soaking is not routine maintenance. It is for a cartridge that has gone hard and gritty with calcium, which in this region happens more than the manufacturer literature suggests.

When is a cartridge finished?

When the pleats will not stand up any more, when the fabric feels thin or fuzzy rather than crisp, or when the ends have separated from the plastic caps. Any of those means it is passing water it should be catching.

When the clean baseline pressure has crept up permanently and a full degrease and acid soak does not bring it back down. That is media that has been packed or degraded past recovery.

When the internal core has cracked or the pleats have collapsed inward, which happens after a long run at high pressure or after somebody ran the system with a partly blocked cartridge.

Realistically, most cartridges here give two to four seasons depending on how hard they work and how well they get cleaned. Buying a second set so a soaked cartridge is never holding your pool hostage is the single best quality of life upgrade a cartridge owner can make.

What goes wrong on reassembly?

A dry or damaged lid o ring. Clean it, inspect it for nicks and flat spots, and lubricate it with a silicone based lubricant, never petroleum jelly, which degrades the rubber. A leaking lid is almost always this.

A cartridge not seated. On multi cartridge systems the top manifold has to sit down onto every cartridge evenly. Force the lid on with one cartridge proud and you crack something.

Starting the pump with the air relief closed. Open it, start the pump, let the air purge until water comes out steadily, then close it. Skipping this puts a slug of compressed air into a closed vessel, and that is exactly the scenario that launches lids.

And finally, forgetting to write down the new clean pressure. That number is the whole reason you can tell when to do this again.
