- Salt does not evaporate. A falling reading usually means water was replaced, a leak is diluting the pool, or the cell is under reporting as its plates wear down.

Our water. Salt does not change the fact that this is a chlorine pool. Generation raises pH continuously, and hard fill water gives that climb plenty of material to work with, so calcium plates onto the cell long before it ever shows on the tile. Stabilizer (cyanuric acid) has to stay in range or the sun destroys chlorine as fast as the cell makes it, which is what pushes people to run output at maximum.
Common mistakes we get called to fix
Adding salt because the panel asked for it
Aging cells under report salinity. People haul four bags out for a reading that was never real, and the pool ends up over salted, which corrodes stone, metal, and equipment.
Cleaning the cell with full strength acid
Undiluted acid strips the coating off the plates and takes years off the cell. A properly diluted soak removes the scale without eating what makes the cell work.
Running the pump fewer hours to save money
A salt cell only makes chlorine while water flows through it. Cutting pump hours cuts sanitizer production directly, and in August that gap is where algae gets started.

Does a salt pool still need chlorine?
It makes its own, but it is still a chlorine pool. It needs the same free chlorine level, the same stabilizer range, and the same testing. A salt cell replaces the tablet, not the chemistry.
How long should a salt cell last?
Commonly three to seven years. Hard fill water, running output near maximum, and low stabilizer all shorten it. A cell that failed in two years had a reason, and finding it is cheaper than buying the next one early.
Why does my pH keep climbing?
That is normal for salt. Generation raises pH, and hard North Texas fill water brings plenty of alkalinity for it to work with. Consistent acid dosing is the answer, not a new cell.
