Why pool water turns cloudy, and how to clear it
Cloudy pool water is suspended particles the filter has not removed yet. The usual causes are high pH and high calcium, a filter that is dirty or not running long enough, low free chlorine after heavy use, or dead algae still floating after a shock. Correct the chemistry first, then run the filter.
Why does the water go cloudy after shocking it?
Because you just killed something and it is still in the water. Chlorine does not make algae disappear. It kills it, and the dead cells stay suspended until the filter physically pulls them out. A pool that goes from green to gray cloudy after a shock is a pool that is working correctly.
The second reason is pH. A heavy dose of cal hypo or liquid chlorine can push pH up sharply, and once pH climbs past about 7.8 the calcium already dissolved in the water starts falling out of solution as fine white particles. That is not algae. That is your water shedding hardness because you changed its chemistry too fast.
So the answer to cloudy after shocking is almost never more shock. It is check pH, get it back into the 7.4 to 7.6 range, and then run the filter continuously until it clears.
Is cloudy the same problem as green?
No, and treating them the same is how people waste a weekend. Green is living algae, and it needs a sanitizer answer. Cloudy is suspended solids, and it needs a filtration answer. They overlap because killing green produces cloudy, but the fix at each stage is different.
A quick field test: look at the color and the pattern. Green with a slick feel on the walls is algae. Milky white or gray with clean feeling walls is particulate, usually calcium or dead organics or very fine dirt. Brownish haze that settles overnight and puffs up when you walk in is silt, which is a vacuum to waste job, not a chemical job.
If the water is cloudy and you cannot see the main drain from the deck, the pool should be closed to swimmers until you can. That is not a chemistry rule, it is a safety one. Nobody can see a person on the bottom of a pool they cannot see the bottom of.
How long should it take to clear?
With correct chemistry and continuous filtration, most cloudy pools clear noticeably within 24 hours and fully within 48 to 72. If you are on day four with the pump running and nothing has changed, the problem is not patience. Something in the loop is not working.
The most common something is run time. A pool needs at least one full turnover to see a difference, and many variable speed pumps are programmed on a low speed schedule that is perfect for maintenance and useless for recovery. During a clearing job, the pump runs.
The second most common something is the filter itself. A cartridge loaded with a season of debris passes water through the path of least resistance and stops catching fine particles long before the pressure gauge says anything alarming.
What makes water cloudy when the chemistry reads fine?
Test strips are the usual culprit. A strip that reads chlorine as present will read the same for 1.0 ppm and 4.0 ppm to most eyes, and 1.0 ppm in August is functionally zero. If you have any doubt, get a drop kit or have the water read properly.
High calcium hardness is the second answer, and it is common here. Water that is saturated with calcium will drop it as haze whenever pH or temperature rises, which means the pool looks fine in the morning and cloudy by evening on a hot day. The chemistry test is not wrong. It is telling you the water is full.
Third is phosphate and organic load after heavy use. A pool party, sunscreen, a rainstorm carrying lawn runoff in, all of that adds material the filter has to remove and chlorine has to burn through. That kind of cloudy usually clears on its own within a day if the filter is clean and chlorine is held up.
When is cloudy water actually a filter problem?
When the chemistry is genuinely in range and the water still will not clear after two full days of continuous filtration. At that point stop dosing and open the filter.
On a cartridge filter, look at the pleats. Grease and oils that have soaked in do not rinse out with a hose, and a cartridge that has gone hard and dark needs either a chemical soak or replacement. On a DE filter, look for torn grids or a manifold crack, because DE blowing back into the pool reads as cloudy every time. On sand, check whether the media has channeled or gone to mud.
One more: a pressure gauge that has been reading the same number for a year is often broken rather than reassuring. Gauges fail stuck. If yours has not moved in twelve months, it is not evidence of anything.
The North Texas part
The specific North Texas version of this problem is the August cloud. Surface water above ninety degrees burns free chlorine off within a day, and the same heat drives evaporation, so you top the pool off with hard fill water two or three times a week. Chlorine falls, calcium climbs, pH drifts up from all that aeration, and the water goes hazy without anything obviously going wrong. Then a hot afternoon storm drops an inch of dirty rain into it. That is not one problem with one fix. It is chlorine demand and calcium saturation showing up in the same week, which is why August cloudy pools respond so poorly to a single bag of shock.
When to stop and call
Call when the pool has been cloudy for more than three days with the pump running and correct chemistry, when you cannot see the bottom, or when clearing it has already cost you two rounds of chemicals and a weekend. At that point you are usually buying the wrong product for the actual problem.

Give the filter a real chance before you buy anything. Cloudy water clears when water moves through media long enough to catch what is floating. If you run the pump six hours and then ask why is my pool water cloudy, the honest answer is that you have not filtered yet. Run it around the clock for two days first. Most pools we see clear on run time alone, with no product added at all.
Waiting has a cost though. Cloudy water hides the floor, so nobody can see a slip hazard or a drain cover problem. It also means sanitizer is being spent on whatever is suspended instead of on swimmers. If you have held a good chlorine level for three days and still ask why is my pool water cloudy, the filter itself is the suspect. That is a cleaning or a media job, not another bottle.
Common questions
Should I use a clarifier or a flocculant?
A clarifier clumps fine particles so the filter can catch them, and it is the safer choice for a mild haze. A flocculant drops everything to the floor and then has to be vacuumed to waste, which means losing water and refilling with hard water. Use floc only when you have a real reason and a plan for the water you lose.
Can I swim in cloudy water?
If the chlorine is in range and you can clearly see the main drain, it is a cosmetic problem. If you cannot see the bottom, keep everybody out. Visibility is a drowning safety issue before it is a water quality issue.
Why does my pool cloud up every time it rains?
Rain is soft, slightly acidic, and it arrives with whatever was on your roof, deck and lawn. It dilutes your stabilizer and chlorine while adding organic load, so demand spikes right when sanitizer drops. Test after every heavy rain rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit.
