Should you repair or replace a pool pump?
Repair a pool pump when the motor is sound and the failure is a seal, impeller, lid o ring or capacitor. Replace it when the motor bearings are gone, the housing is cracked from a freeze, or the unit is a worn single speed. Pump replacement runs $900 to $2,400+.
How do you know the pump is actually failing?
Listen first. A healthy pump makes a steady hum. Bearings going out produce a rising growl or a screech that gets worse as the motor warms, and that sound only goes one direction. A rattle that changes with flow is usually debris or cavitation instead, which is a different and much cheaper problem.
Then look at the pump pot. If it will not hold prime, if the water level in the basket drops while running, or if you can see a swirling vortex of air in there, the pump is pulling air. That is almost always the lid o ring, the drain plugs, the pot itself or a suction side leak. It is not usually the motor.
Then look underneath. A steady drip from the point where the motor meets the wet end is the shaft seal, and it is telling you water is finding its way toward the motor bearings. Left alone long enough, a five dollar seal turns into a motor replacement.
Finally, feel for heat and watch for tripping. A motor that shuts down after twenty minutes and restarts once cool is thermally overloading, which means either a failing capacitor, a bad bearing, or something blocking the airflow into the motor vents.
Which pump repairs are worth doing?
Anything on the wet end. Lid o rings, drain plug o rings, diffusers, impellers, shaft seals and the pot itself are inexpensive and they restore the pump to genuinely as new performance. A clogged impeller in particular is an hour of labor that returns full flow.
On the motor side, a capacitor is a real repair with a real life ahead of it. Start capacitors fail routinely, present as a motor that hums but will not spin, and replacing one on a motor that is otherwise sound is money well spent.
Unions and the plumbing immediately around the pump are worth repairing rather than living with. A weeping union pulls air, and a pump pulling air runs hot, loses flow and shortens its own life. Small leaks on the suction side cause problems out of all proportion to their size.
When does replacing make more sense than repairing?
When the bearings are gone. Rebearing a pool motor is technically possible and almost never economic once labor is counted, and a motor that has run with a leaking seal usually has corrosion inside that will bring it back within a year.
When the housing is cracked from a freeze. Epoxy on a pump housing is a temporary patch that fails under pressure and fails without warning, generally while nobody is home. That housing is a pressure vessel and it should be replaced.
When the parts are no longer made. Older pumps reach a point where the impeller or the diffuser is discontinued, and a repair that depends on a used part from an unknown source is not a repair.
And when you are stacking repairs. Two service calls in a season on the same pump is the market telling you something. The rule of thumb worth using: if the repair costs more than roughly half of a new correctly sized pump, put the money toward the new pump.
Is a variable speed pump worth the difference?
Usually yes, and the reason is not only the energy bill. A variable speed pump lets you run longer at a lower speed, and longer at a lower speed is better water. More turnover hours, gentler filtration that catches finer particles, and much less noise on a pad twenty feet from a bedroom window.
The energy case is real too. A pump is the largest or second largest electrical load at most houses with a pool, and power consumption falls sharply as speed falls. Running slower for more hours moves the same water for meaningfully less electricity than running full speed for fewer.
The honest caveats. A variable speed pump costs more up front, sitting at the upper end of that $900 to $2,400+ band. It needs to be programmed correctly, and a badly programmed variable speed pump running too slow is worse for your water than the single speed it replaced. And a heater or a suction side cleaner may set a minimum flow the pump has to respect.
If your pool is on a single speed pump that is at end of life anyway, the decision is easy. Replacing a single speed with another single speed to save a few hundred dollars once is a choice you will pay for every month.
What does a pump replacement actually cost?
Pump replacement runs $900 to $2,400+. Horsepower, single speed against variable speed, and the condition of the plumbing on the pad all move it.
Plumbing is the variable people do not expect. A pump that sits on clean, square, correctly sized pipe swaps out quickly. A pad that has been modified by three previous owners, with reducers and mismatched pipe and a pump sitting at the wrong height, needs repiping before the new unit goes on. That is real labor and it should appear on the quote as its own line.
A trip plus diagnosis runs $175 to $275+, and it is the right first step when you are not certain what failed. It buys a technician actually testing the failure rather than guessing, and when you approve the repair it goes toward the work.
How to tell which one you have
- It starts, runs a second, then trips the breaker
- A hard electrical fault rather than a worn part. Locked bearings, a shorted winding or water inside the motor all do this. Stop resetting, because every reset sends full current into the fault.
- Filter pressure has dropped and the returns feel weak
- The pump is moving less water than it used to. Low pressure with poor return flow usually means a worn impeller, a blocked suction line, or a motor that is losing speed under load.
- Rust streaks run down the motor onto the pad
- Water has been getting into the motor for a while, almost always past a failed shaft seal. Corrosion inside is already underway, so a seal replacement now may only buy you a few months.
- A variable speed pump will not hold its programmed speed
- A drive or control board fault rather than a mechanical one, and sometimes a voltage supply problem. This needs diagnosis, because the drive is often the most expensive single part on the unit.
- A hairline weep near a threaded port on the housing
- Plastic that was overtightened or frozen once. Threaded ports crack under stress and the crack always grows. A pressure vessel with a crack in it does not get patched, it gets replaced.

Short version. A like for like single speed swap on clean unions is within reach of a confident homeowner. New wiring, a bonding lug or a variable speed schedule is worth paying for, because that is where people get hurt.
What moves the price
A range is only honest if you can tell which end you are on. These are the things that decide it.

Fitting a new motor onto a worn wet end
A fresh motor pushing a tired impeller and an old diffuser gives you a new noise and the old flow. If the wet end already has years on it, price the whole pump before spending on half of it.
Leaving a screeching pump running while you shop
A failing bearing makes heat, and heat is what turns a repairable pump into a seized motor or a fire risk. Shut it down and run only short cycles, long enough to keep the water moving.
Skipping the bonding lug during a swap
The bond wire ties the pump into the grid that protects swimmers. It is a small green wire on a lug and it is the most commonly forgotten part of a self installed pump. Missing it is a shock hazard.
Sizing up because the pool seems slow
Slow flow is usually a loaded filter, a blocked line or a partly closed valve. A bigger pump fights the same restriction harder, wastes power, pulls air past the skimmer and shortens filter life.

- January and FebruaryThe failure season. A pump that froze and cracked shows itself on the first restart, so check the housing and the drain plugs before energizing anything after a hard freeze.
- March to MayPollen raises filter pressure, which raises the load on the pump. A motor already near the end gets pushed here, and a pump that struggled in spring rarely survives the summer.
- June to AugustHeat is the killer. A pad in full afternoon sun runs a motor well above its rated ambient, and marginal bearings fail in this window more than any other. Shade and airflow extend life.
- September to NovemberThe best time to replace by choice rather than emergency. Parts are available, schedules have room, and you are not paying for speed on a Saturday in the middle of July.
Our water. Two regional factors shorten pump life here. The first is the freeze pattern, where a mild winter lulls everybody into leaving a summer timer schedule running and then a two day hard freeze cracks a housing that was perfectly healthy in November. The second is clay soil. The expansive clay under most of Denton and Tarrant county swells and shrinks through wet and dry cycles, and it moves equipment pads and the rigid PVC running under decks along with it. That slow movement puts a permanent strain on unions and fittings, which is why suction side air leaks are so common on older North Texas pads and why a pump here works harder for the same flow than one on stable ground.
When to stop and call
Call at the first screech or the first drip under the motor, because both are cheap on the day they start and expensive a month later. Call immediately, before touching anything, if the pump has been running dry, if the breaker trips repeatedly, or if you see scorching or smell burning at the pad.
Should I repair or replace my pool pump, and how to decide before it dies
This decision usually gets made in a panic, in July, with green water starting. That is the worst time to think clearly. If your pump is over eight years old and single speed, work out should I repair or replace my pool pump now, while it still runs. Get the model number off the label and keep it in your phone. Common questions
My pump is loud but the pool looks fine. Can I wait?
A new noise is a bearing or a cavitation problem and neither improves with time. Waiting turns a seal or a suction leak into a motor. If the noise is genuinely new, get it looked at while the choice is still yours to make.
Can I replace a pool pump myself?
Mechanically, some people can. The parts that go wrong are electrical bonding, correct wire size, breaker sizing and the bonding lug, and those are the parts that hurt somebody. The plumbing is not the hard bit. The 240 volt connection and the equipotential bonding are.
Do I need the same horsepower as the old pump?
Not necessarily, and matching the old sticker is how oversized pumps get perpetuated. Correct sizing comes from pool volume, the plumbing size and the desired turnover. An oversized pump wastes power, strains the filter and can pull air past a skimmer.
How long should a pool pump last?
Well maintained, many years of service, with the wet end typically needing seals and o rings along the way. What actually kills them early is running dry, running with a leaking shaft seal, and freeze damage. All three are preventable.
