Pool tile repair
Pool tile repair replaces the loose, cracked or fallen tile at the waterline and on steps, and addresses what made it fail. In North Texas that is usually hard water scale, freeze movement, or a failed grout and mastic joint. Scope is confirmed on a site visit before a price is written.
Signs you need this
- A tile is sitting on the step and nobody saw it fall
- That tile let go from behind rather than from impact. Something has been working at the bond, usually water tracking in from a failed joint above, and the one you found is rarely the only loose one.
- Grout lines are cracked along one stretch of the waterline
- Cracks that run in a line follow movement, not wear. The beam or the deck above has shifted a little and the grout gave first, because it is the most brittle thing in the whole assembly.
- A white crust bridges the tile and the water
- That is calcium built out of hard fill water. Scale grows behind grout as well as on it, and as it grows it pushes tile off the wall. The crust you can see is doing the least damage.
- Tiles sound hollow when tapped along one wall
- The bed behind them has failed even though nothing has dropped yet. Hollow tile is a repair you get to schedule. Fallen tile is one you do not, and the difference between them is usually one winter.
- The same two tiles keep coming back off
- Somebody reset the tile without fixing what caused it. Water is still getting behind that spot from a joint, a crack or a leak, and no adhesive holds against a substrate that stays wet.

What moves the price
A range is only honest if you can tell which end you are on. These are the things that decide it.

Short version. Spot repair is right when the cause is local and a match exists. Once several sections have failed, replacing the run costs less than four separate visits and looks better doing it.

Tile rarely falls for no reason. Scale wedging behind the grout, a mastic joint letting water into the beam, and freeze movement are the three we see most here.
Repair and address the cause
We set replacement tile and fix the condition that caused the failure. Replacing tile over a joint that is still letting water in only buys you a season.
Confirm in writing
Full scope, including whether a match was found or a full run has to be replaced, is confirmed on the site visit before you approve a price.

- March to MayWinter failures surface now. Freeze movement pops tile in January and owners find it in March, when the cover comes off and somebody finally looks closely at the waterline.
- June to AugustEvaporation drops the water below the tile line on its own and exposes the scale band. It also means that band has been growing all season with every top off from a hard water hose.
- September to NovemberThe right time to fix it. Getting tile and the joint above it sound before the first freeze is the difference between one repair and a considerably larger one next spring.
- December to FebruaryFreeze and thaw does the damage. Water sitting behind grout expands on a hard night, and the two night February freeze is enough to lift tile that was already loose.
Our water. The waterline is where our hard water shows itself first. Every inch of evaporation in a 100 degree August concentrates calcium, and it deposits right at the line where water meets air. At 150 to 250 parts per million in the fill, that band builds every single summer. Keeping pH and alkalinity in range slows it down. Nothing available stops it completely here.
Common mistakes we get called to fix
Scraping scale off with a metal blade
Steel takes the glaze off with the calcium and leaves a dull scratched face that stains faster afterward. The tile looks cleaner for a week and worse for the rest of its life.
Regrouting under a failed joint
The joint above the tile is where the water is coming from. New grout laid under a cracked joint is fresh material sitting in the same wet spot, and it fails on exactly the same schedule.
Using hardware store adhesive underwater
Products not rated for continuous submersion release within months. The tile looks set on the day and turns up on the step in the spring, and the wall has to be opened all over again.

Common questions
Can you match my existing tile?
Sometimes. Many pool tile lines are discontinued after a few years. If we cannot match it we will say so plainly and give you the option of replacing a full run so the result looks intentional rather than patched.
Why does the tile keep falling off in the same spot?
Because the cause was never fixed. That spot is usually where the mastic joint failed or where scale is thickest. Replacing tile is the last step of that repair, not the whole repair.
Does the pool have to be drained?
Usually only lowered below the tile line, which is far less disruptive than a full drain. On North Texas clay we avoid draining a pool unless the scope genuinely requires it.
