Hard water and scale in North Texas pools
North Texas fill water is hard, so calcium hardness climbs in every pool that evaporates and gets topped off. Above roughly 400 ppm, with high pH, calcium leaves the water as scale on tile, heaters and salt cells. Dilution is the only real removal. Balance and sequestrants slow it down.
Why is North Texas fill water so hard on a pool?
Because the water arriving at your hose already carries dissolved calcium and magnesium, and a pool never gets rid of it. Water evaporates. Minerals do not. Every inch that leaves your pool in July goes up as pure water vapor, and every inch you add back arrives with more calcium than the last.
That gives you a one way ratchet. A pool filled in April at a moderate hardness can be meaningfully harder by September without a single thing going wrong, purely from evaporation and top up. Nothing you dose reverses it, because there is no practical chemical that removes calcium from a pool.
This is why hardness deserves a spot on your weekly test panel rather than an annual check. It is slow, it is invisible, and by the time you can see it you are looking at removal work rather than prevention.
What does scale look like before it is obvious?
It starts as a slight roughness at the waterline that you notice with a fingertip before you notice it with your eyes. Run a hand along the tile just above where the water sits. Smooth is fine. Gritty, like very fine sandpaper, is the beginning.
The second early sign is a white or gray band on the tile that does not come off with a brush. Calcium carbonate scale is chalky and will often give to a pumice stone with effort. Calcium silicate is harder, grayer, and generally will not, which is the one you want a professional to handle before somebody scratches the tile trying.
Inside the equipment it shows up as symptoms before it shows up as a picture. A heater that takes longer to reach temperature. A salt cell that reports low output while the salt level is fine. Rising filter pressure that does not fall after a cleaning. Scale is insulating and restrictive, so it always announces itself as reduced performance first.
Can you lower calcium hardness without draining?
Not meaningfully. There are products sold as hardness reducers, and most of them are sequestering agents that hold calcium in solution rather than removing it. That is genuinely useful, but understand what you bought. The calcium is still in the pool. You have made it behave.
Sequestrants also have to be redosed, because they break down under chlorine and sunlight. A pool held together by monthly sequestrant is a pool being managed, not fixed, and the dose schedule has to be kept or the calcium comes out of solution all at once.
The real lever most people ignore is pH and alkalinity. Calcium leaves solution when pH climbs, so a pool held at 7.4 to 7.6 with alkalinity in range can carry noticeably more hardness without scaling than the same pool allowed to drift to 8.0. Discipline on pH buys you years.
When is a partial drain actually the answer?
When hardness is high enough that no amount of pH discipline keeps the water from scaling, and you are throwing sequestrant at it every month. At that point you are renting a solution rather than buying one, and dilution costs less over two years.
A partial drain is exactly what it sounds like. Take a portion of the water out, replace it with fill water, and the hardness falls proportionally. Because fill water here is itself hard, you never get down to zero, which is why partial drains get repeated over the life of a pool rather than done once.
The one thing that must be respected is the ground. Do not drain a pool low without knowing your water table and your shell type, and never drain a plaster pool to empty on a whim in wet weather. Hydrostatic pressure can lift or crack a shell, and a plaster surface exposed to sun and air will craze. This is the part of the job worth handing to somebody who has done it.
How do you keep scale off a heater and a salt cell?
Keep pH down and keep flow up. Both pieces of equipment scale on their hottest and most electrically active surfaces, and both of those conditions get worse when water moves slowly. A clean filter and a correctly sized pump speed protect the heater more than any additive does.
For salt cells specifically, inspect on a schedule rather than waiting for a warning light. A cell with white deposit between the plates has already lost output, and letting it run scaled shortens its life considerably. A soak in a proper diluted acid solution, with the mix and the timing done right, is routine care.
For heaters, the failure to fear is a scaled exchanger, because it is expensive and it does not repair. Heaters that run in hard water with drifting pH give up years of life they did not need to give up. If you own a heater in this region, the pH number is worth more attention than the chlorine number.
The North Texas part
This is the regional problem, not a general one. A pool in Flower Mound, Grapevine or Coppell losing an inch a day through a hot summer replaces a meaningful share of its own volume with hard fill water between spring and fall, and every gallon of that arrives with calcium and leaves nothing behind when it evaporates again. What causes scale buildup in a pool when you never added calcium
Nobody pours calcium into a pool on purpose. It arrives in the fill water, and around Flower Mound that water runs hard at roughly 150 to 250 parts per million. What calcium hardness should a plaster pool run?
Roughly 200 to 400 ppm is the common working range for plaster, with the low end risking a hungry water that etches surfaces and the high end risking scale. Where you sit inside that range matters less than whether pH is disciplined, because pH is what decides if the calcium stays dissolved.
Will a whole house water softener fix my pool?
It can soften what you add, and some owners fill through one deliberately. Two cautions: softened water swaps calcium for sodium and can end up too soft for a plaster shell, and filling a whole pool through a residential softener is slow and hard on the unit. Talk it through before plumbing it in.
Is scale on the tile only cosmetic?
The tile band is cosmetic. What it tells you is not. Visible waterline scale means the same water is depositing on the heater exchanger and the salt cell plates where you cannot see it, and those two are the expensive ones.
Can I remove waterline scale myself?
Chalky calcium carbonate often gives to a pumice stone on glazed tile with patience and a lot of water. Stop if it is not giving. Gray, glassy calcium silicate needs bead blasting or professional treatment, and forcing it with abrasives is how tile gets permanently dulled.
