Algae treatment is a multi day process, not one dose of shock. Green algae clears fastest, mustard algae hides on shaded walls and returns, and black algae roots into plaster and needs mechanical work. Every version ends the same way, with the filter running hard and cleaned repeatedly until the water polishes.
Signs you need this
- The water is clear but the walls feel slick
- Slick walls are the first stage of algae, before the water clouds at all. Catching it here is a brushing and a dose. Waiting a week turns it into a multi day recovery.
- Yellow dust settles on the shaded side and brushes away
- That is mustard algae. It clears with a brush and comes straight back, because it lives on surfaces chlorine barely reaches, including brushes, floats, and cleaner hoses.
- Dark spots on the plaster that will not brush off
- Black algae roots into the surface and grows a protective layer over itself. It needs mechanical work and direct treatment on the spots, not a bigger dose in the water.
- The pool turned green within three days of a storm
- Storm runoff carries phosphates and organic debris into the water while diluting your chlorine at the same time. That combination is the fastest green we see all year.
- Chlorine reads high and the water is still green
- Either the chlorine is locked up by high stabilizer, or the algae is already dead and the filter has not removed it. Both look identical from the deck and need different work.

Short version. We drain when stabilizer or hardness genuinely cannot be corrected any other way. For algae alone, recovery is faster, cheaper, and does not put your plaster at risk.

Fix the chemistry that let it in
Stabilizer above roughly 100 makes chlorine sluggish and high pH weakens it further. Both get corrected first so the sanitizer is doing real work.
Chlorinate and brush across days
A sustained level, brushing at every visit, and the pump running long hours. This is the part that no single visit can compress, no matter what it costs.
Clean the filter, more than once
A recovering pool loads a filter fast, and once it is loaded circulation drops and the recovery stalls. Cleaning it mid job is not an upsell, it is the job.

Reaching for algaecide as the first move
Most algaecides are a follow up, not a treatment. Poured into a green pool they foam, some copper products stain, and they do little that sustained chlorination would not do better.
Turning the pump off overnight during recovery
Recovery is filtration. Every hour the pump is off is an hour dead algae stays suspended, and it lets the water stratify so chlorine never reaches the floor.
Stopping the moment the water turns blue
Blue and cloudy is halfway. Mustard and black algae in particular reseed from surfaces and equipment, so the level has to hold for days past the point it looks finished.

Can you clear it in one day?
Rarely, and promising it is how customers get burned. Killing algae is fast. Removing dead algae is filtration, and filtration takes turnovers and filter cleanings. Two to five days is realistic for most pools.
Should I just drain it and start over?
Usually no. Draining costs a full refill of hard water, risks a plaster shell moving or cracking in our clay soil, and is often not faster. We drain only when the chemistry genuinely cannot be corrected.
Why does mustard algae keep coming back?
Because it survives on surfaces chlorine barely touches, including brushes, floats, and cleaner hoses. A recovery that skips those and does not hold a higher level for several days looks finished and then reseeds.
