Signs you need this
- The water is clear and your eyes still sting
- Clear water can still be used up water. Bound chlorine (chloramine) is what burns eyes, and it means the pool needs a proper test and a correction rather than another jug poured in blind.
- Green comes back in the corners two days after you shock it
- Something is feeding it. Usually that is phosphate load from lawn runoff or fill water, and until the food source drops, shocking is a weekly tax you pay with no lasting result.

- Stabilizer (cyanuric acid) is probably locked too high. The chlorine is present and cannot do the work, which is a different job from algae treatment and it usually ends in a partial drain.

- That reads as metal, not algae. Well water or a corroding heater core puts iron and copper into the pool, and chlorine will set that stain into the plaster if you shock it first.
- A white crust on the tile that a brush will not move
- Calcium is coming out of solution and landing on the glaze. That is a hard water problem, so it needs an ongoing balance program and a proper descale, not a treatment poured in once.
- Salt pool with the cell at full output and no chlorine holding
- Either the salt level is off, the cell is scaled shut, or the water is so far out of balance that the cell cannot keep up. That is salt system work, and testing tells you which of the three it is.

What moves the price

Through a North Texas year
- February and early MarchCold water hides everything. Numbers look calm because nothing is growing yet, so this is the cheapest month of the year to correct a stabilizer or hardness reading before demand starts.

Shocking a stained pool before identifying the stain
Chlorine oxidizes metal and drives it into the plaster. A copper or iron mark that would have lifted with a sequestrant becomes permanent, and the only remaining fix is a surface job.
Trusting strips for stabilizer and hardness
Strips screen for chlorine and pH reasonably well and read those two numbers badly. People end up dosing against readings that were never accurate, which is how a pool stays wrong all season.
Adding algaecide instead of removing the food
Algaecide slows growth for a few days. If phosphates are high the bloom simply returns, so you buy the same bottle every other week and never get ahead of the actual cause.
Chasing pH without ever touching alkalinity
Alkalinity is what holds pH still. Dosing acid into water with no buffer gives you a good reading for two days, then the same climb again, over and over through the whole summer.

Common questions
Why does my pool go cloudy every spring?
