Phosphate Removal and Metal Staining Treatment
Phosphates feed algae and metals stain surfaces, and both usually arrive from outside the pool. Lawn fertilizer and weed spray wash phosphates in after a rain. Iron and copper come from fill water, well water, and corroding heater parts. We measure both before treating, because these products are not cheap.
Signs you need this
- Chlorine vanishes within a day of every dose
- Something is eating it. A heavy phosphate load feeds algae that consumes sanitizer before it ever shows as visible green, which is why water can look fine and still burn chlorine.
- A rust colored smear under a return or a ladder
- Iron coming out of solution and plating onto plaster. It usually starts near metal or near the fitting where fresh fill water enters, then spreads slowly outward from there.
- A blue green tint on the steps that will not brush off
- That is copper, often from a corroding heat exchanger or from a copper based algaecide. Chlorine does not remove it, and adding more can set the stain harder into the surface.
- The pool went cloudy after the lawn was treated
- Fertilizer and weed spray wash in with the first rain. Phosphate levels can jump in a single afternoon, and the cloudiness is algae responding before you can see any color.
- The water goes brown when you shock it
- That is dissolved iron oxidizing. It means metal is in the water rather than on the surface, and shocking without a sequestrant is exactly what drops it onto your plaster.

Measure before spending
Phosphate removers and sequestrants are among the most expensive things on the truck. We test first, so you are never treating a number that was fine to begin with.
Find where it is coming from
Fertilizer and weed spray after a storm, a well fed autofill, decaying leaves, or copper from a corroding heater. Treating without closing the source means treating again next month.
Treat, then clean the filter
Phosphate remover binds phosphates into a cloudy solid that the filter has to catch. Skipping the filter cleaning afterward puts that cloudiness straight back into the pool.
Hold it with a written program
Metals need sequestrant on a schedule rather than once. Phosphates need the source controlled. We write down what repeats and how often.

Our water. Our fill water carries metal as well as hardness, and every August refill brings a little more of both. Iron plates out when chlorine is added or when pH climbs, which is exactly what hard water does on its own. Phosphates behave differently, they never leave on their own and they feed algae quietly, so a pool can hold correct chlorine and still lose the fight.
Common mistakes we get called to fix
Using a copper based algaecide on a stained pool
You are adding the same metal that is already staining the plaster. It works on the algae and then plates out on the surface, trading one problem for a permanent one.
Treating stains without dropping chlorine first
Ascorbic acid treatments need chlorine low to work. Adding the product into a chlorinated pool burns it off immediately, so you pay for a treatment that never had a chance.
Adding phosphate remover and walking away
The product clouds the water on purpose so the filter can grab it. Leaving without cleaning the filter afterward puts the entire load straight back into the pool.
How phosphate removal and pool stain treatment differ, and why order matters
These are two jobs sharing one truck. Phosphate removal and pool stain treatment both begin with working out what is actually in the water, because a metal mark and an organic mark look identical under two feet of it. We test, then hold a small amount of the right acid or a vitamin C tablet (ascorbic acid) against the stain. Whichever one lifts it tells us what we are dealing with. Guessing costs a whole treatment.
You may not need this at all. If chlorine holds and nothing is staining, a phosphate reading on its own is not an emergency, and we will say that instead of selling you a bottle. Common questions
Does every pool need phosphate remover?
No. Plenty of pools sit at levels that never cause trouble. It earns its cost when algae keeps returning despite correct chlorine, which around here often traces back to lawn treatment washing in after a storm.
What is the brown or green stain on my plaster?
Brown to rust usually means iron and blue green usually means copper, and a spot test on the surface confirms which. Chlorine is not the fix, and lowering it temporarily is often part of the fix.
Will a stain treatment come back?
It can, if the metal stays in the water. That is what sequestrant is for. Removing the stain without holding the metal in solution simply resets the clock on the same problem.
