Pool Water Testing and Balancing

Water testing and balancing means measuring free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and stabilizer, then dosing to targets set for your surface and your fill water. Strips estimate, titration measures. In North Texas the two numbers that quietly cause the most trouble are stabilizer and calcium hardness.

Signs you need this

The strip reads the same color no matter what you add
Strips read in wide bands and they go bad fast in a hot garage. A reading that never moves usually means the strips died, not that the pool refuses to change.
pH is back above eight within three days of correcting it
That is alkalinity pushing pH back up. Correcting pH without setting alkalinity first is a loop you can repeat every week forever without ever getting ahead of it.
Eyes sting even though chlorine tests low
Low free chlorine plus stinging means combined chlorine (chloramines) left by swimmers. The pool needs a proper break point dose, not more of the tablet that got it here.
The plaster feels rough while the water is very clear
Very clear hard water over a rough surface points at high calcium and high saturation. It is depositing on the plaster, and clarity is a poor guide to whether the balance is right.
You added acid and the alkalinity dropped too
Acid lowers both numbers. If you did not expect that, alkalinity is now under target and pH will start bouncing. The two move together and have to be handled together.

What moves the price

A range is only honest if you can tell which end you are on. These are the things that decide it.

Short version. Use strips to notice a problem. Use titration before you spend money fixing one, because a dose calculated from a wrong reading makes the water worse than it was.

Our process

  1. Test at the pool, in the shade

    Reagents read wrong in direct August sun on a hot deck. A bad reading leads to a dose that makes the water worse, so this step is not a formality.

  2. Read the numbers in order, together

    Alkalinity moves pH. Stabilizer decides how strong your chlorine is. Hardness decides whether water etches or scales. One number in isolation tells you almost nothing.

  3. Dose to a target, then write it down

    You get the readings, the target, and what we added. Across a few visits the drift pattern shows what your pool actually does rather than what a chart says.

  4. Fix causes, not symptoms

    If chlorine will not hold, the answer may be stabilizer at 120, a phosphate load after a lawn treatment, or a filter that quietly stopped filtering. More chlorine addresses none of those.

  1. March into MayPollen and rain swing pH and alkalinity fast. Test more often than feels necessary, because spring water moves more than summer water does.
  2. June through AugustChlorine demand doubles and evaporation concentrates calcium. Stabilizer creeps up from tablets in exactly the months you can least afford it.
  3. September and OctoberDemand falls off but leaves add organic load. Combined chlorine climbs while free chlorine looks acceptable, so testing both matters here.

That combination pushes pH upward on its own, so acid demand here is constant rather than occasional. Layer on sunlight that destroys unprotected chlorine within hours and you get two numbers, stabilizer (cyanuric acid) and calcium hardness, that quietly decide whether everything else you dose actually works.

Common mistakes we get called to fix

  • Testing in direct sun on a hot deck

    Reagents react to heat and light. A vial sitting on August concrete reads wrong within a minute, and a wrong reading becomes a dose that makes the pool worse.

  • Chasing chlorine without reading stabilizer

    Stabilizer above roughly 100 parts per million slows chlorine down badly. You can pour sanitizer in all summer and never get ahead, and one cyanuric acid test explains all of it.

  • Adding several chemicals at once

    Products fight each other. Acid and chlorine together give off gas, and calcium plus certain treatments cloud the water. Doses need spacing and circulation, not one trip to the pool.

Common questions

Why does my chlorine read zero when I keep adding it?

The usual causes are stabilizer built high enough to lock chlorine out, a heavy phosphate or organic load consuming it, or sun burning it off an unstabilized pool. Testing cyanuric acid answers this in about a minute.

Are test strips good enough?

For a quick look, yes. For decisions, no. Strips read in wide bands and they degrade fast in a hot garage. Chlorine, alkalinity, and hardness decisions should come from a titration kit, which is what our crews carry.

How often should the water be tested?

Weekly through swim season and at least every other week in winter. August chlorine demand can move a pool from balanced to green in five days, and none of that is visible until it already happened.
