Salt system installation

A salt system installation adds a chlorine generator to the return line so the pool makes its own sanitizer from dissolved salt. The cell is sized above the pool volume, not to it, and the plumbing and power scope is confirmed on a site visit. It is not a chlorine free pool.

Signs you need this

You are dosing the pool by hand every few days in summer
Hand dosing works until a hot week outruns it. When the pool needs attention more than once between service visits, the fix is production that runs whenever the pump does, not a bigger jug.
The tablet feeder on the pad is cracked or seized shut
An old feeder with a split lid or a frozen dial is a common trigger for this job. Replacing it is money spent on a device you were already tired of, which is why owners look at a cell instead.
Chlorine falls off sharply between weekly visits
A dose added once a week has to survive seven days of North Texas sun, and it does not. A cell producing every time the pump runs holds a level instead of starting high and ending at zero.
There is no room on the return line where a cell would go
This is the thing that decides the job. A cell needs a straight section and a place for the flow sensor. When the pad is tight, plumbing gets reworked first, and that is worth knowing before you shop.

Short version. If anything else on the pad is being replaced this year, the cell belongs in the same visit. Doing it alone is fine, it just costs more labor for the same result.

Our process

  1. Volume and existing pad

    We need the pool gallons and a photo of the pad. Cell sizing follows volume, and we deliberately size up so the system is not pinned at full output every day of July.

  2. Site visit to confirm scope

    Where the cell can physically go, whether the return line has enough straight run, and what the power situation is. Anything needing a licensed trade is identified here, before a price.

  3. Install and salt

    Cell and flow sensor go in, the power supply gets mounted somewhere dry and readable, and salt goes in and dissolves fully before we set output.

  4. Verify and hand over

    We confirm the cell is producing, set output for the season, and show you what the display is telling you so a fault code in August is not a mystery.

Through a North Texas year

  1. March to MayThe right time to install. Water is warming, demand is climbing, and a cell set up now is dialed in before the first hot weekend rather than in the middle of one.
  2. June to AugustOutput usually needs raising once water passes 90 degrees. A cell sized tight will sit pinned at full production through the whole month, which is exactly why we size up at install.
  3. September to NovemberDemand drops fast once nights cool. Output has to come down or the pool overchlorinates, and this is where owners who never touch the dial quietly waste cell life.
  4. December to FebruaryCells stop producing in cold water by design, generally below the mid fifties. That is normal and not a fault. On freeze nights the cell matters far less than keeping water moving.

Our water. Scale is what kills cells here. Our fill water carries 150 to 250 parts per million of calcium, and a cell running hard pulls minerals straight onto its plates. We set calcium and alkalinity targets at install and then check them, because a cell in balanced water lasts years and the same cell in hard, high pH water is finished in a season.

Common mistakes we get called to fix

  • Sizing the cell to the pool volume exactly

    A cell rated for your gallons runs at full output every day of summer just to keep up. Sizing above the volume lets it coast, and a cell that coasts lasts far longer than one that never rests.

  • Adding salt and testing an hour later

    Salt takes time to dissolve and circulate. Testing early reads low, more bags get added on top of salt that had not mixed yet, and then you are draining water to bring the level back down.

  • Ignoring pH once the system is running

    Generating chlorine pushes pH upward over time. Left alone the water goes high, scale forms on the plates and output drops. Owners then blame the cell for something the acid jug would have solved.

The question we hear first is how long the salt takes to work. Common questions

Does a salt pool still have chlorine in it?

Yes. The cell makes chlorine continuously from dissolved salt. What changes is where the chlorine comes from and how the water feels, not whether chlorine is present. A chlorine free saltwater pool does not exist.

How much salt does it take?

It depends on volume and where the water starts. A pool that already carries some salinity needs less. We measure before we buy salt rather than dumping bags in and testing afterward.

How long does a cell last?

A few years of normal use, less if the water sits out of balance or the cell scales from hard fill water. Scale is the main killer here, which is why we watch calcium closely on salt pools.

Will salt hurt my stone or coping?

It can, on some natural stone and on exposed metal fixtures, especially where splash out dries and leaves salt behind. We flag that on the site visit rather than after your coping starts spalling.
