Salt cell care for saltwater pools
A salt cell makes chlorine by passing current through salted water, so it is a chlorine generator, not a chlorine free system. Cells scale in hard water, lose output as plates wear, and need periodic inspection and acid cleaning. A salt pool still needs weekly testing, stabilizer and pH control.
How does a salt cell actually make chlorine?
Salt water passes between coated metal plates carrying an electrical current, and that current splits the dissolved salt into chlorine at the cell. That chlorine goes into the pool, does its job, and converts back to salt, which is why a salt pool does not consume salt the way it consumes chlorine tablets.
The important consequence is that a saltwater pool is a chlorine pool. It has free chlorine, combined chlorine, a chlorine smell when it is neglected, and every other property of a chlorinated pool. What it does not have is the daily handling of chemicals, which is the actual benefit people are buying.
The second consequence is that chlorine production is a rate, not a reservoir. The cell makes a certain amount per hour of run time at a given output setting. If demand spikes, and in a Texas August it does, a cell running four hours a day simply cannot keep up no matter what the output percentage says.
Does a salt pool still need testing and stabilizer?
Yes to both, and skipping either is the most common way salt pools fail. Free chlorine still has to be tested, because the cell tells you what it is trying to do, not what the water actually holds.
Stabilizer matters more on a salt pool than on a tablet pool, not less. Cell produced chlorine goes into the water unstabilized, and unprotected chlorine in direct Texas sun can be substantially gone within hours. Without cyanuric acid in the right range, the cell runs constantly and the pool still reads low every afternoon.
pH is the other one. Salt systems have a natural tendency to drive pH upward as they operate, so a salt pool needs acid demand watched more closely than an equivalent tablet pool. Left alone, pH climbs, scale forms on the plates, output falls, and the owner concludes the cell is bad when the cell is simply coated.
How often should a cell be cleaned, and with what?
Inspect on a schedule rather than waiting for a warning light. Every few months is reasonable in this region, and more often if you have a heater or a history of high pH. Pull the cell, hold it up to daylight, and look between the plates. Clean plates look clean. Scale looks like a white crust bridging the gap.
If there is only light deposit, a strong hose stream and a plastic or wooden tool is enough. Never scrape between the plates with anything metal or hard. The coating on those plates is the entire value of the part and it does not grow back.
If there is real scale, the cell gets soaked in a properly diluted acid solution, in a cell stand, for a short and watched period. The dilution ratio and the time matter, because acid that is too strong or left too long strips coating along with the calcium. Rinse thoroughly afterward and get the acid disposed of correctly.
If you are cleaning a cell every few weeks, the cleaning is not the fix. Your pH or your calcium hardness is out of control and the cell is just where the evidence collects.
Why does the panel say low salt when the salt is fine?
Because most systems infer salt from conductivity rather than measuring salt directly, and conductivity is affected by more than salt content. Cold water reads lower. A scaled cell reads lower. An aging cell with worn plates reads lower.
So a low salt alarm in February, after a cold snap, on a pool nobody has touched, is very often a temperature reading rather than a salt problem. Adding salt on the strength of that alarm leaves you with a pool that is genuinely too salty by May.
Always confirm with an independent test before adding salt. A test strip made for salt, a drop titration kit or a reading taken from a separate meter will tell you the truth. Salt is easy to add and impossible to remove without dilution, so this is a measure twice situation.
The other repeat offender is an aging cell reporting fine while producing very little. If the panel is happy, the salt is confirmed correct, and the pool still cannot hold chlorine, suspect the cell before you suspect the water.
How long should a salt cell last?
Cells are consumable. The plate coating erodes with every hour of production, and eventually output falls no matter how well the cell has been cared for. That is normal and expected, and it should be budgeted for rather than treated as a failure.
What shortens a cell life dramatically is running it scaled, running it in water with pH allowed to drift high, and running it at a high output percentage for short daily hours instead of a lower percentage over longer hours. Longer and gentler is easier on the plates.
When a cell reaches end of life, replacement is the answer, and cell replacement is quoted on its own rather than folded into weekly service. Before you buy, have somebody confirm the cell is genuinely finished and not simply coated, because a scaled cell and a dead cell look identical from the control panel.
The North Texas part
Saltwater is common on newer builds around Flower Mound, Southlake, Trophy Club and the Canyon Falls and Lakeside developments, and those are exactly the pools filled with hard North Texas water. Hard fill water plus a hot electrified surface is the fastest scaling environment a cell can live in, and it is why cells in this region need inspecting more often than a national maintenance schedule suggests. Add the August problem, where surface water above ninety degrees burns off chlorine within a day, and a cell here spends the whole late summer running near its limit. Short daily run times that were fine in April will not carry a salt pool through August in Denton County.
When to stop and call
Call when the pool cannot hold chlorine with a clean cell and confirmed salt, when the panel throws errors that return after a cleaning, or before you buy a replacement cell on the strength of a warning light alone. A diagnosis costs far less than the wrong part.
How to clean a salt cell without shortening its life
This is a genuine do it yourself job if you are careful with acid. The part people get wrong about how to clean a salt cell is reaching for acid first. Try a hose first. A lot of loose scale rinses straight off the plates. Acid is for what stays behind, and every soak takes a little coating with it. Fewer soaks means more seasons out of the same cell.
Wear eye protection and gloves, mix acid into water and never the other way, and do it outside. If you are not comfortable with that, it is a reasonable thing to hand off. Knowing how to clean a salt cell matters more here than in softer water regions, because our fill water scales plates fast. Is a saltwater pool less maintenance?
It is less chemical handling, which is a genuine quality of life improvement. It is not less attention. You still test weekly, still manage pH and stabilizer, still clean the cell, and you now own a consumable electronic part you did not own before.
Does salt water damage the deck and equipment?
Salt at pool concentrations is far below sea water, but it is still salt and it does accelerate corrosion on some metals and can affect certain natural stone. Rinse splashout off stone decking and keep an eye on any exposed metal near the water.
Can I shock a saltwater pool?
Yes, and sometimes you must. A super chlorinate setting on the panel is not a substitute for a real shock when the pool has an actual problem. Use liquid chlorine and keep an eye on pH afterward.
Why does my salt pool go green in August with the cell running?
Almost always run time and stabilizer. The cell only makes chlorine while the pump runs, and in peak heat the daily demand can exceed what a short schedule produces. Longer run hours and a correct stabilizer level fix more August salt pools than any product does.
