Freeze split fittings and what to do the morning after
Water expands as it freezes, so any standing water in a pump housing, filter body, heater header, valve or fitting can split it. Splits often stay dry until the pump restarts and puts the plumbing under pressure. After a hard freeze, inspect the pad before you energize anything.
What actually splits when water freezes on a pad?
Whatever is holding still water in a shape that cannot expand. The pump housing and its pot are near the top of the list, because they are a thick walled plastic vessel full of water with a lid that seals. The filter body is next, particularly a cartridge filter with a large volume of water in it.
Then the heater. Heat exchangers have thin tubes and headers with tight passages, and they are among the most expensive things on a pad to lose to a freeze. A heater is also the component most likely to be at the far end of a bypass, holding water nobody thought about.
Then the fittings and valves. Three way valve bodies, union nuts, threaded adapters, elbows above ground and the salt cell housing all hold water and all have geometry that concentrates stress. Unions are especially common, because they are a joint with a thin collar under load.
And then anything exposed. Above ground PVC on a pad without insulation is more vulnerable than buried pipe, because buried pipe is protected by soil temperature. Most freeze damage in this region happens between the ground and the top of the equipment.
Why does the damage show up days later?
Because ice does not leak. While the water in a split fitting is still frozen, the crack is plugged by the same ice that made it, and the pad looks perfectly normal from the house. Nothing announces itself.
Then it thaws. Now there is an open crack in a component that is not under pressure yet, and it might drip a little or it might not drip at all, depending on where the split sits relative to the water line.
Then somebody turns the pump on. Now the pressure side of the system goes from zero to normal operating pressure in a couple of seconds, and every split on the discharge side opens. That is when the pad floods, and it is why the first restart after a freeze deserves supervision.
The slow version is worse. A hairline split in a housing can hold for weeks and then let go on a hot afternoon when nobody is home, and a pump running on an empty pool does considerable damage to itself before anybody notices.
What should you do the morning after a hard freeze?
Look before you switch. Walk the pad with the power still off and look at the pump pot, the filter body, the heater cabinet, every union and every valve body. Fresh splits in PVC are usually visible as a clean line, and often the plastic has bulged slightly along it.
Check whether anything is obviously ice bound. If the pump pot still has ice in it, do not run the pump. A pump trying to turn against frozen water in its housing is a good way to add a motor to the repair.
When you do start it, stand there. Turn it on, watch the pad for a full minute, and be ready to shut it off. This is the single most useful thing a homeowner can do after a freeze, and it costs one minute.
Then check the pool level over the next day. A split on a buried return line will not show on the pad at all, and the only symptom is water disappearing. A freeze followed by a pool that starts dropping is worth a leak search rather than a wait and see.
Why does a mild winter make this worse?
Because it removes the habit. A December in the sixties convinces everybody that this year is fine, the summer pump schedule is still running, the freeze protection nobody tested is still untested, and the hose bib insulation is still in the garage.
Then a front comes through and the temperature drops forty degrees in a day. That is the North Texas pattern, and it is genuinely more damaging than a steadily cold climate, because in a cold climate everything gets winterized properly in October and stays that way.
The other half of the mild winter problem is duration. Our damaging freezes are usually two or three nights, which is long enough to freeze standing water in equipment but short enough that the ground never freezes. So the buried plumbing survives and the pad does not, and the repair list is concentrated in exactly the expensive components.
And there is the power failure version, which we have lived through. Freeze protection that depends on the pump running does nothing when the grid is down, and a pad with no circulation on a twenty degree night is a pad full of standing water.
What prevents it next time?
Moving water. Water in motion does not freeze at the same rate as standing water, so the primary defense in this region is keeping the pump running through the cold hours rather than draining a pool the way northern climates do. That is why freeze protection settings on automation matter here and why a summer schedule left in place through January is a risk.
Knowing how to drain the pad. If the power goes out, the plan changes entirely, and the answer becomes removing the water: pump drain plugs out, filter drained, heater drained, valves opened. Knowing where those plugs are before the outage is worth more than any product.
Insulation and covers on exposed components, and keeping the pad clear so cold air is not funneled through it. Simple, cheap and easy to do in November.
And a schedule change rather than a hope. Opening or winterization runs $275 to $650+, and the freeze protection part of that is a small share of the value. Most of the value is somebody who does this every winter checking the things you would not think to check.
How to tell which one you have
- Filter pressure reads zero with the pump running
- Either the gauge froze and burst, or the system has lost water ahead of it. Gauges are among the cheapest freeze casualties, and a dead gauge hides every other thing that matters on the pad.
- The pump runs and the pool level keeps dropping
- A split on a buried return or a cracked component discharging into the ground. Nothing shows at the pad. If the level only falls while the pump runs, the leak is on the pressure side.
- A valve handle will not turn after the thaw
- Ice may still be inside the body, or the diverter cracked and jammed. Forcing a stiff valve snaps the stem. Let it thaw completely and try again gently before assuming the valve is finished.
- A fine crack running the length of the salt cell housing
- A classic freeze split. Cell housings are thin walled and hold a large slug of still water. The cell inside may be perfectly fine, but the housing is a pressure part and it has to be replaced.
- A scorched smell from the heater on the first run
- Moisture got into the controls during the freeze, or a rodent was sheltering in the cabinet. Shut it down. A wet or chewed control board is a repair, and running it makes that repair bigger.

A range is only honest if you can tell which end you are on. These are the things that decide it.

A filter tank holds far more water than a pump pot and splits just as readily. So do valve bodies, the salt cell housing and above ground elbows. Protection has to cover everything holding still water.
Trusting freeze protection you have never tested
A setpoint in an automation panel means nothing if the sensor has failed, the mode is wrong or a schedule overrides it. Test it in November by lowering the setting and watching the pump start.
Refilling a split line and hoping it seals
PVC splits do not close back up. Pressure opens them further on every cycle, and a slow crack becomes a burst on a hot afternoon. Split parts get replaced, and replacement is cheap next to water damage.

Our water. This is the local failure mode more than any other on the list. North Texas gets a handful of genuinely hard freezes a year, and they arrive after weeks of mild weather that make everybody comfortable. The result is a region full of pads running summer schedules on the night of the first twenty degree low. February of twenty twenty one taught a great many people here what a multi day freeze with a grid failure does to an equipment pad, and the repair backlog ran for months because every pool in the metroplex needed the same parts at the same time. The practical takeaway is that the preparation has to happen in November, when nobody feels any urgency, and that the plan needs a version that works without electricity.
When to stop and call
Walking the pad and looking for visible splits before you flip the breaker is exactly the right homeowner move and it prevents a lot of damage. Pulling drain plugs during an outage is also reasonable if you know where they are. Call before restarting a pad with visible cracks, and call rather than patching. Epoxy on a pump housing or a filter body is a temporary fix on a pressure vessel, and pressure vessels fail without warning, usually while nobody is home.
What to check on a pool after a hard freeze, before you touch the breaker
Wait for a thaw. Ice inside a fitting is holding the crack closed, and turning the pump on while it is frozen turns a hairline split into a broken housing. Common questions
Should I drain my pool for winter in Texas?

The pump ran all night and I still have damage. Why?
Circulation protects the water that is moving. Anything on a closed bypass, a valve set to an unused port, a heater that is isolated, or a line to a feature that was not running still holds standing water. Those are the pieces that split even on a pad that ran all night.
Can a cracked union just be tightened?
No. A split is a crack in the plastic, not a loose seal, and tightening a cracked collar usually finishes it. Split fittings get replaced, and the replacement is cheap compared with the water damage a failure under pressure causes.
How do I know if the heater froze?
Often you do not until it runs, which is why a heater deserves particular attention on the first restart. Look for water inside the cabinet, check for drips at the headers, and if there is any doubt have it looked at before it is fired.
