Pool light out: what failed and what to do

A dark pool light is usually the lamp, the transformer, the switch or a tripped GFCI. If the light trips a GFCI, water has most likely reached the fixture, the cord or the niche. Leave that circuit off. Pool light work happens with the power off and by somebody qualified.

What actually fails when a pool light goes out?

The lamp itself, most often on older incandescent fixtures. Those bulbs have a finite life, they run hot, and they fail the way any filament fails. On an LED fixture the failure is usually the driver electronics rather than the diodes, and it takes the whole fixture with it.

The transformer, on a low voltage system. Most residential pool lights run at twelve volts through a transformer at the pad or in a nearby enclosure, and transformers fail. A transformer that has been rained on for fifteen years is a normal thing to find dead.

The switch, the timer or the automation relay. A relay inside an automation panel that has been switching a light twice a day for a decade eventually stops closing, and from the deck that looks exactly like a dead bulb.

And the wiring in between, including the cord that runs from the fixture back through the conduit to the junction box. That cord lives in a wet environment and it is a genuine failure point on older pools.

How can you tell a bulb from a supply problem?

Start with what else is on the same control. If the light is on an automation panel, check whether the panel thinks it is on. A panel that reports the light as on while the pool is dark points at the fixture or the supply. A panel that will not turn it on at all points at the panel.

Then check whether anything shares the circuit. If the light and something else on the same breaker both went out together, you are looking at a breaker or a GFCI rather than a lamp.

Then look at the breaker and the GFCI. A tripped GFCI is not a neutral piece of information and it deserves its own section below. A breaker that is off and resets fine, with the light then working, tells a different story than one that trips again immediately.

What you cannot safely determine from the deck is anything past that. Testing voltage at a pool light junction box, opening a transformer enclosure or pulling a fixture out of a niche is not a homeowner diagnostic step, and the reason is in the next section.

Why does a pool light trip the GFCI?

Because a GFCI compares the current going out with the current coming back, and it trips when they do not match. A mismatch means current is leaving the circuit through some path that is not the wire, and around a pool that path is very often water.

The usual mechanism is water intrusion. A fixture lens gasket has failed and the fixture has flooded. The cord jacket has cracked where it passes through the conduit. The niche has filled and reached a connection. Any of those lets current find ground through the pool.

That is precisely the hazard a GFCI exists to prevent, and it is the reason pool light circuits are required to have one. The device is not being oversensitive. It is doing the exact job it was installed to do, and it is doing it before anybody gets in the water.

So the correct response to a pool light that trips a GFCI is to leave that circuit off and get it diagnosed. Not to reset it repeatedly, not to swap the GFCI for a standard breaker, and not to use the pool while the fault is unresolved. A tripping pool light circuit means keep the light off and keep people out of the water until somebody qualified has found the fault.

Can a pool light be changed with water in the pool?

Yes, and on most pools it is the normal way it is done. Wet niche fixtures are built with enough cord coiled behind them to be lifted out onto the deck, which is why the cord is that long in the first place.

What makes that safe is the sequence, not the water level. The circuit is verified off at the breaker before anything is touched, the fixture is brought out and opened on dry ground, the gasket and lens are inspected and replaced rather than reused, and the fixture is tested and returned to the niche with the cord correctly coiled so it can be pulled again in the future.

The parts of that sequence that go wrong for homeowners are the parts that matter. A lens gasket reused because it looked fine leads to a flooded fixture. A circuit assumed off because a switch was flipped is a circuit that is still live. A fixture left sitting out of the niche and energized overheats within minutes, because those lamps are cooled by the pool water.

This is one of the jobs where the physical task is easy and the consequences of getting the process wrong are severe. It is worth having done properly.

Is LED conversion worth it while the niche is open?

Usually, because the expensive part of a pool light job is the access rather than the fixture. If somebody has already verified the circuit, pulled the fixture and inspected the niche, the incremental cost of putting a better light back in is small compared with doing it as a separate job later.

The practical gains are real. LED fixtures draw far less power, run far cooler, and last a great deal longer than the incandescent lamps they replace, which matters when the replacement job involves getting into a niche at all. Color changing options exist, and on a pool with automation they can be controlled alongside everything else.

The honest caveats. Not every old fixture and niche accepts every modern LED assembly, and some conversions want a different transformer or a different control scheme, particularly for color functions. A conversion on a pool with a very old junction box or degraded conduit may reveal work that needs doing first.

And on a pool where the light has been tripping a GFCI, conversion is not the fix. The fault gets found first. Putting a new fixture on a circuit with water in the conduit gets you a new fixture with the same trip.

The North Texas part

Two regional patterns show up in pool light failures here. The first is age. A great many Denton and Tarrant county pools were built in the same building waves, which means whole neighborhoods reach the end of original fixture and cord life within a few years of each other. If your neighbors have been replacing lights, yours is on the same clock. The second is soil movement. Expansive clay swelling and shrinking through wet springs and dry Augusts puts slow strain on the conduit running from the niche back to the junction box, and that movement is a real cause of cracked conduit and stressed cord jackets on older pools. Water in the conduit is exactly what makes a GFCI trip, so a light that starts tripping after a very wet spring or a very dry summer is worth taking seriously rather than resetting.

When to stop and call

This is one to hand over. Checking whether the breaker is on, whether the automation panel thinks the light is on and whether anything else on the circuit died with it is fine homeowner ground. Everything past that involves an energized circuit in a wet environment, and pool lights are one of the few places where getting it wrong is genuinely dangerous rather than merely expensive. If the light trips a GFCI, leave the breaker off, keep people out of the water and call. Do not reset it repeatedly and do not replace the GFCI with a standard breaker to make the tripping stop.

Try the switch and the transformer first. Many pool lights run on low voltage through a transformer that has its own breaker, and that breaker is often in a box nobody has opened in years. Never pull a light fixture with the pool full and the power live, and never swim while a light circuit is tripping. Everyone answering why is my pool light not working should say that out loud. If the GFCI trips, the answer is a qualified electrician, not a new bulb.

Common questions

The light works but the GFCI trips after a few minutes. Is that still water?

Very likely. A small intrusion can take time to bridge a path once the fixture heats and the water moves, which is why some faults trip on a delay. A delayed trip is the same fault as an immediate one and it deserves the same response, which is to leave the circuit off until it is diagnosed.

Can I just leave the light off and use the pool?

That is a question for the person who diagnoses it, because it depends on what the fault turns out to be and how the circuit is arranged. Until somebody has determined where current is going, the safe assumption is that the pool should not be used at night with an unresolved electrical fault on it.

How long does an LED pool light last?

Considerably longer than the incandescent lamps they replaced, which is much of the appeal given how much work it takes to reach the fixture. Life is affected by how often the pool runs, water chemistry against the lens, and whether the fixture ever gets energized out of the water.

Do both lights failing at once mean the transformer?

It is the most likely single explanation, along with a shared breaker or an automation relay. Two independent lamps failing on the same evening is far less likely than one thing they both depend on failing once.
