Storm debris cleanup, in the right order
After a storm, check the equipment pad and power before anything else, then net the floating debris before it sinks, then empty the baskets, then vacuum the settled silt to waste rather than through the filter. Test and rebalance last. Debris removed on day one prevents most of the chemistry problems on day three.
What gets checked before you touch the water?
Power and the pad. If lines are down or there is standing water around the equipment, stop and get that dealt with properly. Nothing in the pool is worth being near energized equipment in water.
Then check whether the pump is actually running. Storm outages trip breakers and reset timers, and a pool that lost circulation for two days has a bigger problem building than the leaves on top of it.
Then look for physical damage. A limb on the pad, a cracked lid, a knocked over feeder, a heater vent full of debris, a cleaner hose wrapped around something. Also check the skimmer weir doors, which snap off easily when a large branch comes through.
Then look at the water level. A big rain can put the level above the skimmer mouth, at which point the pool has stopped skimming entirely and is just holding debris on the surface.
Why does netting have to happen first?
Because floating debris is easy and sunk debris is not. Leaves that stay on the surface get netted in ten minutes. The same leaves after a day on the bottom are waterlogged, they break apart when you touch them, and they stain plaster.
Sunken organic material is also a continuous chlorine drain and a phosphate source. A pool that swallowed a yard worth of oak leaves and left them there for a week has spent a lot of sanitizer on cleanup and gained a nutrient load that will help the next bloom along.
And it protects the equipment. Debris drawn into the skimmer and pump basket in bulk restricts flow, and a pump starved of water is a pump running its seal dry. Empty the baskets, then empty them again an hour later, because a storm pool refills them fast.
How should the settled silt come out?
To waste, if your system has that option. Fine clay silt and grit are exactly what a filter is worst at, and vacuuming a heavy load through a cartridge will pack it solid in one session. On a multiport valve, the waste setting sends it out of the pool entirely.
If you do not have a waste option, use a vacuum with a leaf bag or a dedicated debris canister ahead of the pump so the bulk never reaches the filter, and plan on cleaning the filter afterward regardless.
Go slowly. Fast vacuuming stirs silt into a cloud that settles again behind you, which is how a thirty minute job becomes three visits. Slow, overlapping passes, and let the water settle overnight before you judge the result.
And top the water back up as you go if you vacuumed to waste, because you can lose more level than you expect and a pump that loses prime mid job is an avoidable annoyance.
What does the water need afterward?
A test, once the debris is out and the filter has run for a few hours. Rain dilutes stabilizer and chlorine while the debris load raises demand, so both sides of the equation moved at once.
A shock is often justified here, not as a reflex but because the pool genuinely took on a load of organic contamination. Check combined chlorine, and if it is above roughly 0.5 ppm, the shock is earned.
A filter check. Storm cleanups load a filter fast, and running for a week on a filter packed with silt is how a clear pool goes hazy in the days after everything looked finished.
And a look at the water color. If it is tea brown rather than green or gray, that is tannin from leaf litter steeping, and it will clear with chlorine and filtration rather than needing anything exotic.
What an overflow does to the chemistry
Rain reads close to zero on every test you run. Several inches of it thins chlorine, stabilizer, calcium and alkalinity at the same time, and a pool that goes over the coping loses the top of its treated water entirely and replaces it with more rain. Most lists of what to do with a pool after a storm stop at the debris, and the chemistry is where the second week of trouble comes from.
Stabilizer is the reading to check first. It only leaves by dilution, so a heavy rain and an overflow is exactly the event that moves it, and your free chlorine target moves down with it. Owners who skip that test hold the old target, add the old dose, and cannot work out why the pool is thin again by Wednesday.
A pool that took in yard runoff has a different problem from a pool that only caught leaves. Runoff carries soil, mulch, lawn feed and whatever was sitting on the driveway, so chlorine demand stays high for weeks rather than days and the water can look fine on Sunday and dull by Thursday. Watch that pool for two weeks rather than declaring it finished. The fix for next time is outside the water: a redirected downspout, a bed edged higher than the deck, or a shallow swale across the low corner.
On a salt pool, add the salt reading to the list. Several inches of rain genuinely dilutes salt, and a cell that drops below its working range will report low output and eventually stop producing. Confirm with a strip or a meter rather than trusting the panel, because salt is easy to add and the only way back down is dilution.
Power down before you reach into anything
The first item on our own list of what to do with a pool after a storm is the breaker, not the net. Turn the pump off at the panel rather than at the timer or the automation screen. An outage resets timers, and a controller that comes back on its own schedule can start a pump while your arm is in the skimmer throat. Off at the panel is the only version of off that stays true after the power returns.
That goes double for the light. Storm water and a limb strike can crack a lens or pull a niche fitting loose, and nobody should be feeling around inside a light niche with the circuit live. If the lens looks damaged or the fitting has moved, leave it alone and have it looked at before the light is switched on again.
Pull the automatic cleaner out early. If you get warning, take it out before the storm. If you did not, take it out before you start netting. A cleaner buried under a mat of leaves gets its hose wrapped, its throat packed and its wheels jammed, and dragging it up through all that debris is how hoses get torn.
Then walk the perimeter for hail damage, because hail lands on the parts people forget to check. Punctured safety cover fabric, a shredded solar blanket, torn screen panels, cracked lids on the equipment pad, and dented heater grilles that restrict the airflow the burner needs. Photograph all of it the same day while the date is obvious, then sort out what is a claim and what is a Saturday.
The North Texas part
The specific local problem is post oak. Cross Timbers neighborhoods across Flower Mound, Argyle, Bartonville and Copper Canyon sit under mature post oak, live oak and cedar elm, and those trees do not simply drop leaves, they steep. Leaf litter left in the water for a day or two releases tannin and turns a pool the color of weak tea, which owners consistently mistake for algae and treat with a bag of shock they did not need. The second local factor is our clay. Storm runoff here carries fine clay silt that settles into a smooth layer on the pool floor and puffs into a cloud the moment anybody walks through it, and it is fine enough to blind a cartridge filter in a single vacuum session. Vacuum that to waste and save yourself the filter clean.
When to stop and call
Most storm cleanups are a Saturday and a net. Call when the pool took on enough debris that you cannot see the floor, when the pad was flooded or the equipment will not restart, when a large limb went into the shell and you want the plaster looked at, or when you would rather not spend the weekend on it. A one time cleanup is a normal thing to buy after a bad storm.
What to do with a pool after a storm, starting with the breaker
Before anything else, look at the equipment pad. If water rose over the motor or a limb landed on the plumbing, leave the power off and call someone. Common questions
Should I shut the pump off during a storm?
Usually no. Circulation is what keeps the water sanitized and keeps debris moving to the skimmer. The exception is a storm bad enough to be dropping large debris, where a pump pulling branches into the skimmer can do damage. If you shut it off, remember to turn it back on.
My water turned brown after the storm. Is it algae?
Tea colored brown is usually tannin from leaves steeping in the water. It responds to chlorine and filtration. Brown that settles overnight into a layer on the floor is silt and needs vacuuming, ideally to waste.
Do I need to lower the water level after heavy rain?
Only back to mid skimmer. Above the skimmer mouth the pool cannot skim, so the surface debris just sits there. Take the excess off with the waste setting or a submersible pump and stop at the middle of the opening.
