Acid wash or resurface: how to tell which one you need

An acid wash removes a thin layer of plaster to expose fresh material underneath, so it fixes staining and discoloration on a sound surface. It does not fix rough, thin, delaminating or failing plaster, and every wash uses up finish you cannot replace. Resurfacing is the answer once the plaster itself is done.

What does an acid wash actually do?

It dissolves a very thin layer off the top of the plaster. Stains, discoloration and mineral deposits live in that top layer, so removing it takes them with it and exposes cleaner material underneath. The pool looks dramatically better afterward, which is why people love it.

It is also destructive by design. Plaster is a finite thickness applied over the shell, and every acid wash spends some of it. A pool can take a small number of washes over its life, not an unlimited number, and each one leaves the surface slightly more porous than before.

More porous matters. A rougher surface holds algae more easily, which is one of the reasons pools that have been washed repeatedly start having black algae problems they never had before.

When is an acid wash the right call?

When the plaster is structurally sound and the problem is appearance. Even discoloration, organic staining that survived chlorine, a dull grey cast on an otherwise smooth surface, or the aftermath of a pool that sat green for a long stretch.

When the surface still feels smooth under your hand and there is no exposed aggregate, no hollow sounding areas and no flaking. A sound surface can afford to give up a thin layer.

When the pool has to be drained anyway for another reason, which removes most of the argument about whether the drain is worth the risk.

And when it has not been done recently. If your pool was acid washed two or three years ago, doing it again is spending finish you do not have to spare.

What are the signs the plaster is actually finished?

Roughness you can feel and that catches on skin or swimsuits. Plaster that has lost its smooth top layer will keep getting rougher, and it will keep hosting algae in the texture.

Exposed aggregate, where the pebble or sand in the mix is visible through the surface in patches. That is plaster worn through, and no amount of washing brings it back.

Hollow sounding areas or bubbles, which mean the plaster has separated from the shell underneath. That is delamination and it is a structural repair, not a cosmetic one.

Deep crazing, spalling flakes, or stains that come back within a season of being removed. Repeated re staining usually means the surface is porous enough to absorb, and washing a porous surface makes it more porous. And age. Plaster has a working life, and a pool whose finish is old is a pool where money spent on a wash is money delaying a decision rather than avoiding it.

What are the risks people underestimate?

Draining the pool. An acid wash requires an empty shell, and an empty shell in saturated ground can float, crack or shift. In this area that is a real consideration rather than a theoretical one, and it decides the timing of the job entirely.

Sun on wet plaster. A drained shell sitting in a Texas summer afternoon can craze, and dark stains can bake into a dry surface within hours. The work has to move quickly and shade or wetting matters.

The acid itself. This is a strong acid used at volume in an enclosed shell, generating fumes with nowhere to go. It requires proper protective equipment, ventilation awareness and a plan for neutralizing the waste before it goes anywhere.

And the waste. Spent acid wash water is not something to send to a storm drain, a creek or a neighbors yard, and most cities here have rules that assume you know that.

Is there a version that does not require draining?

Yes, and it is worth asking about. A no drain treatment, sometimes called a chlorine wash or a no drain acid treatment, works on the surface with the water still in the pool. It is gentler, it removes less, and it is a good fit for organic staining and mild discoloration.

It is also the right approach on exposed aggregate and pebble finishes, which should generally not be acid washed at all because the acid attacks the cement matrix holding the pebbles.

It will not do what a full acid wash does on heavy mineral staining or badly discolored plaster. It trades results for safety and cost, which on a shell you are not sure about is often exactly the right trade.

Whichever route, get somebody to look at the surface first and tell you what they see. The wrong call here is not a chemistry mistake you can redose. It is a finish you cannot put back.

How to tell which one you have

Swimsuits snag on the floor of the shallow end
The finish has lost its smooth top layer where feet and sun work hardest. That is worn plaster, and removing more of what is already thin makes it worse. It is a resurfacing symptom, not a wash.
A dark shadow returns weeks after every cleaning
The stain sits in the surface rather than on it. Porous plaster absorbs, so a stain that comes back quickly is telling you the finish is soaking things up instead of shedding them.
Small hard bumps that feel like grit on the wall
Calcium nodules, which form where water works through the finish from behind. They are a sign the plaster has failed locally, and grinding them off does not stop them coming back.
The water clouds every time somebody brushes
You are brushing off surface material. Old plaster releases dust as it breaks down, so water that clouds on every brushing is a finish reaching the end of its working life.
Tapping the wall sounds hollow in patches
The plaster has separated from the shell underneath. That is delamination, and no surface treatment fixes it. Washing a hollow area can take the whole patch off with it, which turns a cosmetic job into a structural repair.

Short version. Waiting is reasonable while the surface is smooth and sound. Once you can feel aggregate or hear a hollow patch, waiting stops saving money and starts adding shell repair to the job.

    Color from an algae bloom usually lifts with chlorine and brushing once the water is treated. Spending finish to remove a stain that would have cleared anyway is the fastest way to shorten plaster life.

  • Draining before checking the ground and the forecast

    An empty shell in saturated clay can lift or crack. Rain here arrives in inches per hour, so a dry Monday means little by Wednesday. The drain date gets decided by soil and weather, not the calendar.

  • Judging plaster life from the deep end only

    Wear is never even. The shallow end, the steps and the sunniest wall go first because they take the most traffic and the most ultraviolet. Assess the worst area, because that is what sets the timeline.

  • Treating a resurface as a purely cosmetic upgrade

    New plaster changes water chemistry for months while it cures, and it needs a specific startup routine with daily brushing and careful balancing. Budget for the startup, not only for the finish itself.

Through a North Texas year

Our water. Timing is the local issue. North Texas clay swells with water and shrinks in drought, and it is the same movement that cracks decks and shifts coping around here, so an empty pool shell is at its most vulnerable after a wet stretch. Our rain arrives in inches per hour rather than steadily, which means the ground can go from dry to saturated between scheduling a job and starting it. Then there is the heat. A drained shell in July under direct sun is fighting the clock against crazing and baked in staining, so this work belongs in the cooler, drier parts of the year. Late fall through early spring is when it should happen here, which is also why a plan made in August usually gets scheduled for October.

When to stop and call

This one is not a homeowner project, and that is not a sales line. It requires draining a shell in expansive clay, working with concentrated acid in an enclosed space, moving fast enough that plaster does not dry in the sun, and neutralizing the waste properly. Call for an assessment before you decide anything, because the first real question is whether there is enough plaster left to wash at all, and that question needs somebody looking at the surface.

How many times can a pool be acid washed?

A small number over the life of a plaster finish, and every wash removes material that does not come back. If your pool has been washed before, that history should be part of the decision rather than a footnote.

Can a pebble or quartz finish be acid washed?

Generally not in the same way. Acid attacks the cement matrix holding aggregate in place, so a full wash on a pebble finish risks loosening the surface. A no drain treatment or a bead blast is usually the right approach there.

Will an acid wash fix rough plaster?

No, and it will make it rougher. Roughness is worn plaster, and removing more of it is the opposite of a fix. Rough plaster that catches skin is a resurfacing conversation.

How do I know if my plaster is thin?
