When a green pool should not be drained
Do not drain a green pool because of its color. Draining leaves algae on the walls, throws away balanced water, and risks the shell. An empty pool in saturated clay soil can lift or crack, plaster crazes in the sun, and vinyl liners shrink. Drain only for chemistry you cannot correct.
What can actually happen to an empty pool?
A pool shell in the ground is not sitting there by its own weight. It is held down by the water inside it. Take the water out while the ground around it is saturated, and groundwater pressure under the floor can push the whole shell upward. That is a pop up, and the pool does not come back down.
Even without a full pop up, an empty gunite shell in wet ground can crack. A fiberglass shell can bulge or deform. A vinyl liner that dries out shrinks, goes brittle and will not stretch back into the corners when you refill, which turns a cleaning job into a liner replacement.
Then there is the surface itself. Fresh water plaster wants to stay wet. Left dry in direct sun, plaster crazes into a fine crack network, and dark algae stains bake into the surface within hours rather than lifting off later. Drying a green pool in a Texas July afternoon can permanently print the algae pattern into the finish.
Why does draining not solve the algae anyway?
Because most of the algae you are looking at is not floating. It is attached, in a film, on the plaster and the grout lines and in the roughness of the surface. Remove the water and every bit of that is still there, now baking in the sun.
You also still have to sanitize afterward. An empty shell has to be scrubbed and chlorine washed, and then the pool has to be refilled and balanced from scratch. That is more labor than treating the water, not less.
And you lose the easy parts. The water you drained already had your calcium hardness, your alkalinity and your stabilizer in it. The replacement water arrives with none of the ones you wanted and plenty of the one you did not.
What are the real reasons to remove water?
Cyanuric acid too high to chlorinate against. This is the honest one. If stabilizer has crept past the point where you can hold an effective free chlorine level, dilution is the only practical way down, and no amount of shock will substitute. That is a partial drain sized to the number, not a full drain.
Calcium hardness high enough that the water scales no matter how disciplined the pH is. Same logic. There is no chemical that removes calcium, so water goes out and fill water comes in.
Total dissolved solids so high the water will not behave, which usually shows up on very old water that has been topped up for many years without ever being partly exchanged.
And the practical one: a shell being resurfaced anyway. If the plaster is coming off, the water is coming out regardless, and the green becomes irrelevant.
If water does have to come out, how is it done safely?
Partially, and with the ground in mind. Most corrections are achieved by exchanging a percentage of the water rather than emptying the pool. You almost never need an empty shell to fix a number.
Check the hydrostatic relief valve in the main drain before anything else. That valve exists so groundwater can push up into the pool instead of pushing on the floor. On older pools it is often plugged, seized or plastered over, which removes the one thing protecting the shell.
Time it for dry ground and cool weather. Draining after a week of rain is the worst possible timing, and draining in July puts the surface in direct sun. Late fall and early spring are kinder to a plaster shell and to the ground around it.
And plan where the water goes. A neighbors yard, a street storm drain or a septic field are all wrong answers, and heavily chlorinated or algae laden water has real rules attached to it in most cities here.
How do you decide, in one sitting?
Get a full test panel first, including cyanuric acid and calcium hardness. Those two numbers decide the question. Color does not.
If both numbers are workable, the answer is a green to clean, and that is $450 to $1,250+ depending on how far gone the water is. If stabilizer or hardness is beyond correcting, the answer is a partial exchange plus a recovery, which is a different scope and should be quoted as one.
If someone offers to drain your pool without having tested those two numbers, they are guessing with your shell. Ask for the readings first. It is a two minute test and it decides a decision worth thousands.
How to tell which one you have
- Water still stands in the yard two days after rain
- The ground is saturated and not draining. Groundwater under a shell is what lifts a pool out of the ground. Nothing about the water inside matters until the soil around it has dried out.
- The deck has heaved or dropped since last year
- Soil is moving actively right now. An empty shell in ground that is already shifting has lost the weight holding it down, so the structure needs a look before anybody discusses draining.
- The main drain cover has been siliconed or plastered over
- The hydrostatic relief valve underneath may be sealed shut. That valve is the pressure release for the floor of the shell. If it cannot open, an empty pool has no protection at all.
- The vinyl liner has faded and gone stiff
- An older liner that dries out shrinks and will not stretch back into the corners. Draining a tired liner usually means replacing it, which turns a cleaning question into a renovation.
- Stabilizer and calcium both test in normal range
- The two numbers that would justify removing water are fine. Whatever is wrong is a treatment problem, and fresh water improves none of it. Color on its own is never a reason to drain.

Short version. Almost every chemistry problem is solved by a sized partial exchange. A full drain belongs to resurfacing and acid washing, and it is a structural decision that needs dry, cool weather.
What moves the price
A range is only honest if you can tell which end you are on. These are the things that decide it.

What people get wrong here
Sending the water to the street or a storm drain
Chlorinated and algae laden water is regulated in most cities here, and storm drains run to creeks. Discharge rules exist and fines follow. Ask your city before a hose goes anywhere, not after.
Renting a pump and starting on a Friday afternoon
An empty shell should never sit unattended. Weather turns, a rain band arrives, and nobody is there to refill. If water is coming out, somebody has to stay until it is going back in.
Pulling the hydrostatic plug and walking away
If groundwater rises through the open plug, the pool is telling you the ground is loaded. That is the moment to stop and refill, not to keep pumping. Ignoring water coming in is how shells crack.
Assuming a partial drain is safe at any depth
There is a level below which the shell loses the ballast holding it down, and it is higher than most people expect. Size the exchange to the number you are correcting and stop well above it.
Through a North Texas year
- December to FebruaryGround is usually at its driest between fronts and the sun is weak, which is the least damaging time to have a shell empty. A hard freeze can arrive with two days notice, so the window is short.
- March to MayOur wettest stretch. Several inches of rain can land in a day, and soil that was dry on Monday is loaded by Wednesday. The worst season of the year to plan an empty pool.
- June to AugustSun is the problem rather than water. A drained shell in a 100 degree afternoon crazes plaster and bakes stains in within hours. Avoid unless the pool is being resurfaced anyway.
- September to NovemberThe most workable window. Ground dries through late summer, the sun sits lower, and there is time to refill and rebalance well before the first freeze arrives.
Our water. North Texas sits on expansive clay, and that clay is the reason draining here deserves more caution than it does on sandy ground. Our soil swells when wet and shrinks when dry, which is why so many houses in Denton and Tarrant County are on piers and why decks around pools move and crack over the years. That same movement acts on a pool shell, and an empty shell has lost the water weight that was resisting it. Add the way our rain arrives, several inches in a day rather than an inch a week, and the ground around a pool can go from bone dry to fully saturated between the morning you decide to drain and the afternoon you finish. If the pool must be drained, it gets done in a dry stretch, in cool weather, with the hydrostatic valve checked first.
When to stop and call
Call before any drain deeper than a foot or two, and always call before emptying a shell. This is the one part of pool care where a homeowner mistake is structural rather than chemical. Treating the water is a job you can take on. Emptying the pool is not, and anybody who tells you otherwise is not the one paying for the crack.
When a pool should not be drained, told to you before somebody quotes it
If a company offers to drain and pressure wash a green pool as the first idea, ask why. Understanding when a pool should not be drained is a safety topic before it is a money one. There are real reasons to drain, and we do it when they apply. The point of knowing when a pool should not be drained is that you can tell a considered plan from a lazy one. Ask about groundwater, recent rain, and the hydrostatic relief valve. If you get a blank look at that third one, get another opinion before anyone opens a valve on your pool.
Common questions
My pool has been green since last year. Does that change the answer?
It changes the labor, not the decision. Long standing green means more debris on the floor and probably staining, but the shell risk of draining is identical. Test stabilizer and hardness and let those numbers decide.
What about a fiberglass or vinyl pool?
Both are less forgiving than gunite, not more. Fiberglass shells can deform without water supporting them, and a vinyl liner that dries and shrinks will not go back. Neither should be emptied without a specific plan and someone experienced doing it.
Can I drain halfway and refill to save the pool?
A partial exchange is the normal, safe version of this and it fixes real chemistry problems. Just size it to the number you are correcting rather than draining by feel, and stop well above the point where the shell loses its ballast.
