Pool auto fill problems and what they cost you

A pool auto fill is a float valve in a small well plumbed to house water. Stuck open, it runs continuously, dilutes chemistry, raises the water bill and hides real leaks. Stuck closed, the pool drops until the skimmer starts pulling air. Hard water crusts the valve either way.

How does a pool auto fill work?

It is a small box set into the deck, plumbed to the pool so its water level matches the pool level, and fed from a house water line. Inside is a float on an arm connected to a valve, exactly like the mechanism in a toilet tank and often not much more sophisticated.

When the pool level drops, the float drops, the valve opens and water flows in. When the level comes back up, the float rises and the valve closes. There is no electronics and no feedback beyond that float, and on many installations there is no shutoff you can see without lifting the lid.

Some newer installations use a solenoid valve controlled by a level sensor, sometimes integrated with automation. Those fail differently but the principle is the same, and they can also be left running by a sensor that has fouled.

The thing to understand is that the auto fill has no idea why the pool level dropped. It cannot tell evaporation from a cracked return line, and it will faithfully replace either one.

What happens when the valve sticks open?

It runs. Continuously, silently, into a pool that is overflowing to the deck drain or spilling over the coping, and the first evidence is usually a water bill.

The chemistry consequence is worse than the water bill. A pool receiving a constant stream of fresh water is being permanently diluted, so stabilizer drops, chlorine will not hold, and the pool becomes progressively harder to keep sanitized for reasons that look chemical and are not.

The hardness consequence points the other way. Fresh fill water here arrives hard, so a continuously running fill adds calcium and alkalinity all day, which is exactly the recipe for scale on tile, heaters and salt cells.

The easy diagnostic: turn the supply valve to the auto fill off for a day. If the water bill problem, the chemistry drift and the overflow all stop, the valve was the answer.

What happens when it sticks closed?

Nothing, and that is the problem. The pool quietly drops while everybody assumes the auto fill is doing its job, and in a North Texas July that drop is fast.

Once the water reaches the bottom of the skimmer throat, the skimmer starts pulling air, and now the pump is losing prime, running hot, and cavitating. A stuck auto fill is a surprisingly common root cause of a no prime call in August.

A pool run low also damages tile and skimmer weirs, and a pool that goes low enough to expose a heater or salt cell to air stops circulating properly through them.

The check is simple and worth adding to a monthly routine: lift the lid on the auto fill box, look at the water level in the well against the pool level, and press the float down to confirm you hear or see water flow.

Why does an auto fill hide a real leak?

Because it does exactly what it was designed to do. A pool losing water through a cracked return line under the deck never shows a low water level, because the auto fill replaces it every night. The owner sees a pool at a perfect level and a water bill that has been creeping up for two years.

The cost of that concealment is not just water. Water leaking under a deck into expansive clay soil undermines the deck and can move the pad. A slow leak that goes unnoticed for years is a structural problem before it is a plumbing one.

This is why the first step of any leak test is turning the auto fill off. A bucket test with an active auto fill measures nothing.

It is also why a pool with a persistent chemistry drift deserves a look at the fill. Water that will not hold stabilizer and keeps climbing in hardness is often a pool being diluted and remineralized continuously by a device nobody has opened.

What does hard water do to the float valve?

It crusts it. The valve seat, the arm pivot and the float itself all sit in water that is constantly evaporating and being replaced, which is the same concentrating mechanism that scales a tile line. Over years, calcium builds on the moving parts.

That produces both failure modes. A valve seat with deposits on it will not close fully, so it drips continuously. A pivot with deposits on it binds, so the float stops moving and the valve stays wherever it was.

The box itself also collects debris, silt and leaves, and a float sitting on a bed of sediment reads the wrong level. So does a float that has taken on water through a crack and now floats low.

Servicing one is mostly cleaning: pull the lid, clear the debris, look at the valve, check the float, and confirm it opens and closes cleanly by hand. It is a five minute job that almost nobody does until something goes wrong.

The North Texas part

The auto fill matters more here than in most markets because it runs harder. A North Texas pool in July and August can lose close to an inch a day to evaporation, so the fill valve is opening and closing constantly for four months a year while sitting in hard water. That is the fastest possible way to scale a small mechanism. It also means the hidden leak problem is bigger here, because a fill running that often disguises a genuine loss inside what looks like normal summer behavior. And the freeze pattern gets it too: a fill line running through a deck is exposed plumbing, and it splits on the same nights the equipment pad does. Turning the supply off and draining that line is part of a proper freeze plan, not an optional extra.

When to stop and call

Lifting the lid, cleaning out debris and testing the float by hand are easy homeowner jobs and worth doing a couple of times a year. Call when the valve will not seat after cleaning, when the supply line or the box itself is leaking into the deck, or when you turn the auto fill off and the pool keeps dropping. That last case is not an auto fill problem at all, it is a leak the auto fill was covering for, and it needs a proper search.

Can I add an auto fill to a pool that does not have one?

Usually yes, and it is a common addition. It needs a water supply, a deck penetration and the correct backflow protection, so it is a real installation rather than a drop in part. Worth doing properly, because a badly installed fill is a leak in your deck.
