How pool leak detection actually works

Leak detection starts by proving the pool is losing more than evaporation, usually with a bucket test. Then the loss is isolated: shell, plumbing or equipment. Dye testing finds shell leaks, pressure testing and acoustic listening find line leaks, and the pad is checked separately. Location comes before repair.

How do you know you actually have a leak?

You do not, until you have separated loss from evaporation. A North Texas pool in July can lose a quarter of an inch a day to evaporation alone, and considerably more on a hot windy day with low humidity. That is normal and it is not a leak.

Splash out is the other honest explanation. A pool with children in it every evening loses water to the deck, and so does a pool with a spillway that has been adjusted upward. Neither of those is plumbing.

The number that matters is loss beyond evaporation, and the only way to get it is to measure the two side by side. That is what the bucket test does, and it is worth doing before anybody starts talking about equipment.

The threshold people use varies, but the principle does not. If the pool loses meaningfully more than an open bucket of water sitting in the same pool over the same days, something is leaving that should not be.

What is the bucket test and how do you run it?

Fill a bucket with pool water and set it on a step so it sits partly submerged, which keeps the water in the bucket at roughly the same temperature as the pool. Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool level outside it, on the same bucket, with tape.

Turn the auto fill off. This is the step people skip and it invalidates the whole test, because an auto fill quietly replacing the loss makes a leaking pool look stable.

Leave it twenty four to forty eight hours with normal pump operation, no swimming and no backwashing. Then compare. Both dropping the same amount means evaporation. The pool dropping more than the bucket means a leak, and the size of the difference is the size of the problem.

Then repeat it with the pump off for the same interval. A pool that loses much more with the pump running points at pressure side plumbing or the returns. A pool that loses at the same rate either way points at the shell, the skimmer or a suction line. That single comparison saves a great deal of searching.

How does a technician find a leak in a buried line?

By isolating and pressurizing. Each line is plugged at both ends and brought up to a controlled pressure with air or water. A line that holds pressure is eliminated. A line that will not hold is the one that gets attention, and now the search area has gone from an entire yard to one pipe.

Then by listening. With that line under pressure, acoustic equipment picks up the sound of escaping air or water through soil and concrete. A skilled technician working with headphones can narrow a leak to a small area, which is what turns a repair from opening a deck into opening a section of it.

Dye testing handles the parts you can reach. With the pump off and the water perfectly still, a small amount of dye released next to a suspect area shows movement if water is going somewhere. That is how skimmer throats, light niches, return fittings, main drain surrounds and cracks in plaster get confirmed.

None of this is guesswork and none of it should start with a shovel. If somebody proposes digging before isolating, the pressure test has not been done.

Is it the shell, the plumbing, or the equipment?

The equipment gets ruled out first because it is the easiest and it is visible. A wet pad, a weeping union, a leaking filter clamp or a backwash valve passing water to waste can account for a surprising loss, and none of it requires touching the pool.

The shell is next in ease. Structural cracks, failing tile line, a separated skimmer throat, a bad light niche conduit and worn return fittings are all reachable and all dye testable. The skimmer joint in particular is one of the most common leak locations on any pool, because it is where a rigid plastic box meets concrete and the two move differently.

The plumbing is last because it is the most work to prove and the most work to fix. That order is deliberate: you eliminate the cheap and accessible possibilities before you commit to the expensive one.

A pool can also have more than one leak, which is why a good detection ends with the pool being retested rather than with a repair being declared successful.

What happens after the leak is found?

You get a location and a description in writing, and then you make a decision. Not every leak found is a leak worth repairing immediately, and a good report tells you which ones are urgent and which can be scheduled.

Some repairs are simple once located: a return fitting resealed, a skimmer joint repaired, a light conduit addressed, a pad fitting replaced. Others involve opening decking or plaster, and those are planned work with a real scope rather than a same day fix.

A trip plus diagnosis runs $175 to $275+, which covers the technician coming out and testing rather than guessing. On a leak search the deliverable is the location, and that is the part that is genuinely difficult. Anybody can repair a pipe once they know which pipe it is.

Then the pool gets retested after the repair. That step gets skipped constantly and it is the only way to know the leak that was found was the leak that was losing the water.

How to tell which one you have

Water is surfacing where it should not. On a pool with buried lines running to the pad, a wet spot that survives a dry spell is a strong pointer and it narrows the search area a great deal.
Air comes out of the returns but the pump holds prime
A small suction side leak that is not big enough to break prime. That same crack loses water when the pump is off, so it shows up as measurable loss on a still water test.
The water always settles at the same level and stops
The leak is at that height. Water stops falling once it drops below the hole. If it always stops at the skimmer throat or the light niche, you have found the depth without any equipment.
Grout is falling out along one section of the tile line
Water is moving behind the tile. A separated tile band and a leak at the bond beam often travel together, and it usually shows on the side taking the most sun and the most ground movement.
The pool loses more water on the days the cleaner runs
Pressure side plumbing is involved. A dedicated cleaner line only carries water while it is in use, so a split in that pipe hides completely on the days you leave the cleaner switched off.

Short version. A leak losing measurable water every day does not improve on its own. Monitoring only makes sense for a very small loss on a pool already scheduled for work that would expose the pipe anyway.

A range is only honest if you can tell which end you are on. These are the things that decide it.

What people get wrong here

  • Pouring in a leak sealer as the first move

    Sealers can work on very small leaks and they can also coat filters, block cleaner lines and foul equipment. Use one after location has been attempted, and never on a leak you have not measured.

  • Digging where the deck is cracked

    A crack in concrete tells you where the ground moved. It does not tell you where the pipe failed. Pressure testing narrows the search to one line before anything is opened, and it is far cheaper.

  • Assuming the leak you found is the only one

    Pools in shifting clay often have more than one. If loss continues after a repair, that is not a failed repair, it is a second leak. A proper job retests the pool rather than declaring victory.

  • Topping the pool up faster so you can keep swimming

    Constant makeup water hides the size of the problem and drags in hardness and alkalinity all summer. Chemistry that will not settle is a real symptom, and it stops being readable while water keeps arriving.

  4. Late fallThe best detection window of the year. Evaporation is low, ground is usually dry, and any loss you measure is far more likely to be real. It is also cool enough for deck work if a repair follows.

Our water. Leaks here have a season and a cause. The season is late summer, when a pool that has been quietly losing water all along finally outruns the auto fill in hundred degree heat and somebody notices. The cause is very often the clay. Expansive soil across Denton and Tarrant county swells through wet springs and shrinks hard through dry Augusts, and that movement works on skimmer throats, on the joint between a rigid skimmer and the concrete around it, and on the buried PVC running under decks to the pad. The freeze pattern contributes the other half, splitting fittings on a mild winter night nobody prepared for. It is also why running the bucket test in this region matters so much before assuming a leak: our evaporation rates in July and August are genuinely high, and plenty of pools get an expensive search for water that went up rather than out.

When to stop and call

Run the bucket test yourself. It is free, it takes two days, it needs nothing but a bucket and some tape, and it turns a vague worry into a number. Walking the pad for obvious drips is also fair game. Call once the bucket test confirms real loss, because everything past that needs isolation plugs, pressure testing gear and acoustic equipment, and the do it yourself version of a line leak search is a yard with holes in it and the leak still running.

How do you find a pool leak without digging up the yard first

Do the bucket test before you call anyone. It costs nothing and it answers the first question, which is whether you have a leak at all or just a hot dry week. A pool in a 100 degree August loses water on its own. Asking how do you find a pool leak starts with proving there is one, because evaporation and a leak look identical on the tile line.

Then note where the water stops falling. If it settles at the skimmer mouth or a return, you have narrowed it a long way for free. Anyone explaining how do you find a pool leak should tell you what each step rules out and what it costs before they do it. Waiting matters here. A leak under a slab washes soil away quietly, and in this clay that is how decks crack.

Common questions

How much water loss is normal?

It varies enormously with heat, wind, humidity and whether the pool is covered, which is exactly why the comparison matters more than any fixed number. The bucket sits in the same weather as the pool, so it answers the question your neighbor cannot.

Can I find the leak myself with dye?

Sometimes, for accessible things. With the pump off and the water dead still, dye near the skimmer throat, the light niche and any visible crack can show you movement. What dye cannot do is find a leak in a pipe under a deck, which is where most of the difficult ones live.

My auto fill runs constantly. Is that a leak?

It is either a leak or a stuck fill valve, and those are very different bills. Turn the auto fill off and watch the pool for a day. If the level holds, the valve was the problem. If it drops, you have a leak that the auto fill has been hiding, possibly for a long time.

Does a leak affect my chemistry?

Considerably. Constant makeup water dilutes stabilizer and sanitizer while adding hardness and alkalinity, so a leaking pool in this region drifts chemically no matter how carefully it is dosed. Chemistry that will not hold steady is a real symptom worth mentioning.
