What chemical levels make water actually swim ready
Swim ready water holds free chlorine appropriate to its cyanuric acid level, pH between 7.4 and 7.6, total alkalinity roughly 60 to 120 ppm, and calcium hardness roughly 200 to 400 ppm on plaster. Combined chlorine should be near zero and the main drain should be clearly visible from the deck.
What are the working ranges, and which are strict?
pH is the strict one. Aim for 7.4 to 7.6. It can sit between 7.2 and 7.8 without harm, but outside that the water starts either etching surfaces and stinging eyes or scaling equipment and disabling chlorine. Almost every other number is more forgiving than this one.
Total alkalinity roughly 60 to 120 ppm. Lower end suits a salt pool, which tends to push pH up, and higher end suits a plaster pool on tablets. What matters is that it is stable rather than that it hits a specific figure.
Calcium hardness roughly 200 to 400 ppm on plaster. Below that the water gets hungry and pulls calcium out of the surface. Above it the water starts giving calcium back as scale. Vinyl and fiberglass pools tolerate lower hardness because there is no plaster to protect.
Cyanuric acid roughly 30 to 50 ppm on a chlorine pool and 60 to 80 on a salt pool, because a salt cell makes unstabilized chlorine that needs more sun protection. Free chlorine then follows from that number rather than from a fixed target.
Why is there no single correct chlorine number?
Because cyanuric acid changes what a chlorine reading means. Stabilizer binds most of the chlorine into a reserve and releases it slowly, which protects it from sunlight and also holds it back. The higher the stabilizer, the higher the free chlorine reading has to be to have the same active sanitizer in the water.
A pool at 30 ppm stabilizer holding 3 ppm free chlorine is in good shape. The same 3 ppm in a pool at 90 ppm stabilizer is thin, and at 120 it is functionally weak. Nothing about the chlorine changed. The reserve got bigger.
The practical rule most of this trade now uses is proportional: your minimum free chlorine should scale with your stabilizer, roughly in the range of one part chlorine for every thirteen to fifteen parts of cyanuric acid, with a target a bit above that minimum. You do not need to memorize the arithmetic. You need to know that the two numbers are read together, always.
This is also the single most useful thing an owner can learn, because it explains the pool that has plenty of chlorine on the test and algae on the wall.
What actually makes water unsafe rather than just off?
No free chlorine at all. That is the one that matters. A pool at zero free chlorine in warm weather is unsanitized water, and the risk is not cosmetic.
Water you cannot see through. If the main drain is not clearly visible from the deck, the pool is closed regardless of what the chemistry says. That is a drowning visibility rule, not a water quality one, and it is not negotiable for kids in the water.
pH at an extreme. Very low pH is corrosive and irritating, very high pH disables your chlorine and clouds the water. Neither is an emergency in the way zero chlorine is, but both should be corrected before a busy weekend.
High combined chlorine, above about 0.5 ppm, means waste is outrunning sanitizer. It is the source of the eye sting and the smell people wrongly blame on too much chlorine.
How long after adding chemicals can people get in?
After liquid chlorine or a shock, wait until free chlorine has come back down into your normal range and the water has circulated at least one full turnover. That is usually overnight rather than an hour.
After acid, circulate for at least half an hour before anyone gets in, and do not add acid and chlorine together or in the same spot. Add one, let the pool turn over, then the other.
After calcium or alkalinity adjustments, give it a turnover and expect some temporary cloudiness. That is normal and it filters out.
After an algaecide, follow the label, and be aware that some products foam if the dose was heavy handed. If in doubt, the safe answer is always the same: run the pump, test again, then decide.
What does a swim ready pool look like without a test kit?
Clear enough to read a coin on the bottom of the deep end. Not just clear enough to see the floor as a general shape.
No smell at the water line. A pool that smells like chlorine from the deck is a pool with combined chlorine, meaning the sanitizer is behind.
Walls that feel slightly gritty like clean plaster, not slick. Slick walls mean early algae, usually a day or two before anything is visible.
Water moving. Look at the surface for the slow rotation coming off the returns and the pull at the skimmer. A pool with a still surface is not turning over, and no chemical fixes that.
The North Texas part
These ranges hold everywhere. What changes here is which end you live at. Because our fill water is hard, most North Texas pools drift toward the top of the calcium range and stay there, which means pH discipline matters more here than the numbers alone suggest. Because our summer sun is brutal and August water sits above ninety degrees, stabilizer at the bottom of the range leaves chlorine unprotected and stabilizer at the top makes it sluggish, so the middle is worth aiming at rather than drifting through. And because salt pools are common on newer builds around Flower Mound, Trophy Club and Argyle, a lot of local pools are running the higher stabilizer target and a naturally rising pH at the same time.
When to stop and call
You do not need us to hit these numbers. A drop kit, liquid chlorine, muriatic acid and ten minutes a week gets most pools there. Call when the numbers will not hold from one week to the next, when hitting one number keeps breaking another, or when you want the water read properly before a party rather than after.

Saying no is the hard part. Guests are here, the water looks fine, and nobody wants to be the one who cancels. Knowing what chemical levels make a pool safe to swim in gives you a reason that is not an opinion. If free chlorine is at zero, the answer is no today, whatever the water looks like. A number on paper ends the argument faster than a feeling does.
Test before a party, not after. A pool with twelve people in it on a 100 degree afternoon burns through sanitizer far faster than the same pool empty. Check what chemical levels make a pool safe to swim in the morning of, then again once everyone leaves. The second test is the one that tells you whether to dose that night or wake up to a problem.
Common questions
What is the single most important number?
Free chlorine, read against your cyanuric acid. Everything else is optimization. A pool can survive a week of imperfect alkalinity. It cannot survive a week at zero sanitizer in July.
My pH will not stay put. What is wrong?
Almost always low total alkalinity, which is what buffers pH. Bring alkalinity into range first and pH usually settles on its own. Chasing pH while alkalinity is low is the most common wasted effort in pool care.
Is a saltwater pool held to different numbers?
Mostly the same, with two adjustments. Stabilizer runs a little higher because cell made chlorine is unstabilized, and alkalinity is usually kept toward the lower end because salt systems tend to drive pH upward.
Can I swim with slightly cloudy water?
If the chlorine is in range and you can clearly see the main drain, it is cosmetic and it will filter out. If you cannot see the bottom, keep everyone out until you can. That is a visibility and safety line, not a chemistry one.
