How to read pool test results without guessing
A pool test panel has six numbers that matter: free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and cyanuric acid. Read them in order of what controls what. Alkalinity steadies pH, pH decides how hard chlorine works, and cyanuric acid decides how much free chlorine you need.
Which number should you read first?
Not chlorine. Start with total alkalinity, because alkalinity is the shock absorber for pH. If alkalinity is low, pH will bounce every time you add anything, and chasing pH on a pool with no alkalinity is a losing week.
Then pH, because pH decides how much of your free chlorine is in the active form. The same 3 ppm free chlorine does noticeably more work at pH 7.4 than at pH 8.0. A test showing plenty of chlorine and a pool that keeps growing algae is very often a pH story.
Then cyanuric acid, because that number sets the free chlorine target. Then free chlorine, measured against that target rather than against a generic number on a bottle. Then calcium hardness, which moves slowly and matters over seasons rather than days. Then combined chlorine, which is your warning light.
Read in that order and each number explains the next one. Read in the order printed on a strip and you will treat symptoms.
What is the difference between free, combined and total chlorine?
Free chlorine is the chlorine still available to sanitize. That is the working number, and it is the one that belongs on your weekly log.
Combined chlorine is chlorine that has already reacted with organic waste and is now largely spent. It is what people smell and call a chlorine smell, which is backwards: a strong smell means used up chlorine, not too much chlorine. Above roughly 0.5 ppm combined, the pool is telling you it has more waste in it than sanitizer is keeping up with.
Total chlorine is just the two added together. It is the least useful of the three on its own, and it is the only one many cheap strips actually measure, which is why a strip can show a comfortable number on a pool that has no usable sanitizer left.
If your test gives free and total, subtract to get combined. If the difference is large, the answer is usually a shock and a longer filter run rather than more routine dosing.
How far can you trust the test you used?
Strips are fast and rough. They are honest about presence and vague about amount, and they fade with heat and age. A jar of strips that has lived in a hot pool shed since last summer is decorative. They are fine for a mid week sanity check and not fine for making a treatment decision.
Drop kits with a comparator block are better and are what most owners should have. The chlorine test that uses a powder and counts drops until the color disappears gives you a real number rather than a color you are matching by eye, and it works at high chlorine levels where other tests just read maximum.
The cyanuric acid test is the least precise of all of them regardless of kit, because it works by watching a black dot disappear in cloudy water. Treat a stabilizer result as within ten or fifteen of the truth, and if the reading is off the scale, dilute the sample with tap water and multiply. That is the standard method and it is the only way to read a high stabilizer pool honestly.
A store printout is useful, and it is also a sales document. The numbers are usually fine. What follows the numbers is a list of products. Take the readings and make your own decision.
How do you take a sample that is not lying to you?
Elbow deep, away from the returns and away from the skimmer, from the deep end if you can. Surface water and water right in front of a return are the two least representative places in the pool.
Rinse the sample bottle with pool water before filling it. A bottle with dried reagent or yesterday sample in it will move a reading.
Test soon after you draw it. Chlorine in a warm bottle on a hot deck degrades within minutes, and pH drifts as the sample warms up and off gasses. Ten minutes in a truck cab is enough to make a chlorine reading meaningless.
And test at a consistent time of day. Chlorine is highest right after dosing and lowest at the end of a sunny afternoon, so a Sunday morning reading and a Wednesday evening reading are not comparable. Same time, same spot, same kit is how you actually see a trend.
What should you do with the numbers once you have them?
Write them down. A single test is a snapshot and tells you what to do today. Six weeks of tests tells you what your pool actually does, and that is the thing that saves money. A pool that loses one point of pH every week and a pool that loses three are different animals needing different plans.
Correct in order. Alkalinity, then pH, then hardness if it needs it, then chlorine. Dosing chlorine into water that is out of balance wastes a real amount of it.
Change one thing at a time and give it a full turnover before you retest. Half the confused pools we see are pools where four products went in on Saturday and nobody can tell which one did what.
The North Texas part
Two numbers deserve extra attention on a North Texas panel. Calcium hardness, because our fill water is hard and every inch that evaporates in July gets replaced with more calcium, so hardness only climbs and it belongs on the weekly log rather than an annual check. And cyanuric acid, because the same sun that makes stabilizer necessary here also tempts owners into tablet feeders that push it up all summer. On a salt pool add a salt reading and remember that most panels infer salt from conductivity, so a cold February morning can produce a low salt alarm on a pool with perfectly correct salt.
When to stop and call
This is a homeowner skill and it is worth learning. A decent drop kit and ten minutes a week will keep most pools out of trouble. Call when the numbers read fine and the pool still misbehaves, when you cannot get a reading to move no matter what you add, or when you want a second opinion before spending real money on a correction.

How often should I test?

My strips and the pool store disagree. Who is right?
Usually the store, if your strips are old or heat damaged. Bring a fresh sample in a rinsed bottle, kept out of the sun, and tested the same day. If they still disagree by a lot, the strips are the suspect.
What does a high combined chlorine reading mean?
That the pool has taken on more organic load than the sanitizer has processed. Sweat, sunscreen, leaves, a heavy weekend of swimmers or a storm. The fix is a shock at a proper level plus filtration, not a small routine dose.
Do I need to test salt separately on a salt pool?
Yes. The controller estimates salt from conductivity and it is affected by water temperature and by cell condition. Confirm with a strip or a meter before adding salt, because salt is easy to add and can only be removed by dilution.
