CYA lockout: when your chlorine reads fine and the pool grows algae
Cyanuric acid protects chlorine from sunlight by holding most of it in reserve. As stabilizer climbs, the free chlorine reading you need for the same sanitizing power climbs with it. Past roughly 80 to 100 ppm, normal dosing stops working. Only dilution lowers cyanuric acid.
What does cyanuric acid actually do?
It shields chlorine from ultraviolet light. Without it, unstabilized chlorine in direct Texas sun can be largely gone within a couple of hours, which is why an outdoor pool here without stabilizer is close to unmanageable in summer.
It does this by binding most of the chlorine into a reserve compound and releasing it slowly as the active chlorine gets used. So at any given moment, only a small fraction of your free chlorine is actually out doing the work. That is the trade: protection in exchange for speed.
Which means the phrase lockout is a bit dramatic. The chlorine is not gone, it is queued. But from the perspective of an algae cell on your shady wall, queued chlorine and absent chlorine are close enough to the same thing.
Why does the same chlorine reading mean less at higher stabilizer?
Because the reserve scales with stabilizer. At 30 ppm cyanuric acid, a 3 ppm free chlorine reading leaves a healthy amount of active sanitizer in the water. At 90 ppm, the same 3 ppm reading corresponds to roughly a third of that active fraction. At 150, it is functionally nothing.
This is why the modern approach ties the two numbers together. Rather than a fixed chlorine target, you aim for a free chlorine level proportional to your cyanuric acid, roughly in the neighborhood of one part chlorine to thirteen or fifteen parts stabilizer as a floor, with your normal target sitting above that.
The practical consequence is that a high stabilizer pool is not broken, it is expensive. You can hold a pool at 100 ppm stabilizer perfectly clear. You just have to run free chlorine much higher than your neighbor does, and you will buy noticeably more chlorine to do it.
And the shock level rises with it too. Shocking a high stabilizer pool to the number printed on a bag will do almost nothing, which is exactly why a green pool with high cyanuric acid resists a weekend of treatment.
How did it get so high?
Tablets. Trichlor tablets and dichlor shock both carry stabilizer as part of the molecule, so every ounce of chlorine they deliver comes with cyanuric acid attached, and none of that stabilizer ever leaves. A pool run on tablets all summer climbs steadily and predictably, year after year.
A tablet feeder or floater left running through spring and fall is the usual culprit. So is a big spring dose of stabilizer added on a hunch and then repeated the following spring by somebody who did not test first.
Cyanuric acid does not evaporate, does not break down meaningfully in normal conditions, and is not consumed by chlorine. It leaves the pool exactly two ways: splashout and backwash, and water you deliberately remove.
So the ratchet only turns one direction on a tablet pool. That is not an argument against tablets, which are convenient and stable. It is an argument for testing stabilizer a few times a year and knowing when to switch to liquid.
How do you lower it?
Dilution. Remove a percentage of the water and replace it, and cyanuric acid falls by roughly that percentage. To go from 100 to 50 you are exchanging about half the water. There is no way around the arithmetic.
There are enzyme based cyanuric acid reducers on the market. They exist, they can work, they are slow, they are not cheap, and results vary. They are worth considering on a pool where draining is genuinely difficult. They are not the normal answer.
Reverse osmosis mobile treatment is the other route, where a truck filters the water and returns it with the stabilizer and hardness stripped out. It is available in some markets and it costs more than water does. Its real appeal is in drought restrictions or on pools where a drain is risky.
Whatever route, get the test right first. The cyanuric acid test is the least precise on the panel, and at high readings it saturates. Dilute your sample with an equal part of tap water, run the test, and double the result. That is the standard method and it is the difference between knowing your number and guessing it.
How do you keep it from happening again?
Test stabilizer three or four times a year rather than once, and always at opening and again in late summer.
Switch to liquid chlorine for the peak months. Liquid adds no stabilizer at all, so you can run tablets in the shoulder seasons for convenience and go liquid in June, July and August when consumption is highest and the ratchet turns fastest.
Aim for the middle of the range rather than the top. A pool at 30 to 50 ppm has room to absorb a season of tablets and a couple of top ups before anybody has to think about it. A pool that starts the summer at 70 does not.
And remember that a partial drain that lowers stabilizer also lowers everything else. Plan the rebalance as part of the job, especially calcium and alkalinity, because our fill water arrives with opinions about both.
The North Texas part
Stabilizer is not optional here, which is the trap. Our sun is strong enough that an unstabilized outdoor pool in July loses most of its chlorine within hours, so every North Texas owner is told to keep cyanuric acid up, and tablets do it automatically. Then August arrives, chlorine demand doubles in water above ninety degrees, the owner feeds more tablets to keep up, and stabilizer climbs at the worst possible moment. The pool that goes green in the second week of August is very often a pool sitting at 90 or 100 ppm cyanuric acid with a 3 ppm chlorine reading its owner believes is fine. Correcting it means a partial exchange with hard fill water, so the rebalance afterward is part of the job here rather than an afterthought.
When to stop and call
Testing and switching to liquid chlorine is yours to do, and it solves most cases before they start. Call when the reading is high enough to need a real water exchange, when a green pool will not respond to shock because stabilizer is out of range, or before you drain anything, because how much water leaves and when it leaves matters more than most owners expect in our soil.
What is CYA lockout in a pool, in plain terms
The short version: stabilizer (cyanuric acid) holds onto chlorine and hands it back slowly. Ask what is CYA lockout in a pool and you are really asking why your chlorine reading looks fine while algae grows anyway. The test says how much chlorine is present. It does not say how much is free to work. That gap is the whole problem, and no bottle on the shelf closes it.
The habit that causes it is tablets, used year round because they are easy. Every tablet adds stabilizer that never leaves. Once you understand what is CYA lockout in a pool, switch some of your chlorine to liquid in the summer months and the number stops climbing. Ask your service company to write the stabilizer reading on every report. It is the one number that quietly ruins a pool over three years.
Common questions
Is high cyanuric acid dangerous to swim in?
The stabilizer itself is not the hazard. The weak sanitizer that comes with it is. A high stabilizer pool holding an appropriately high free chlorine level is safe water. A high stabilizer pool at a normal chlorine reading is under sanitized.
Can I just add more chlorine instead of draining?
Up to a point, yes, and plenty of pools run that way. It costs more chlorine every week and it makes shocking expensive, and past roughly 100 ppm most owners find dilution cheaper over a season.
Does a salt pool have this problem?
Less so, because cell made chlorine adds no stabilizer. Salt pools usually run a higher stabilizer target on purpose, and their number stays put unless someone adds tablets or stabilizer on top, which happens more often than you would think.
Why does my test strip say the stabilizer is fine?
Strips are especially poor at cyanuric acid. Use a turbidity test with the black dot, and if the reading pegs at the top of the scale, dilute the sample fifty fifty with tap water and double the answer.
