DE filter teardown: what a real annual service looks like

A DE filter needs a full teardown at least once a year. Backwash, open the tank, lift out the grid assembly, inspect every grid fabric and the manifold for tears and cracks, clean and soak the grids, reassemble squarely, then recharge with the correct weight of DE added slowly through the skimmer.

Why is backwashing not enough?

Because backwashing reverses the flow and pushes the DE coating off the grids, but it does not lift out what is embedded in the fabric. Oils, fine organics and calcium stay behind, and each backwash removes a little less of what has accumulated.

You can see it in the numbers. If the pressure after a backwash and recharge sits a couple of psi higher than it did last time, and higher again the time after, the grids are progressively loading and the backwash is no longer restoring the system.

Backwashing also does not tell you the grids are intact. A torn grid keeps filtering, badly, and quietly returns DE to the pool. The only way to know is to take the assembly out and look at it, and that is why the annual teardown exists.

What does the teardown actually involve?

Backwash first to get the bulk of the DE off. Then pump off, relief valve open, drain plug out, and let the tank empty before you touch the clamp band. A DE tank full of water is heavy and the assembly inside is awkward.

Open the tank and lift the grid assembly out as a unit if it will come. Take a photo first. The grid set has a specific order and orientation and a top manifold that has to go back the same way.

Hose every grid down individually, both sides, working the spray into the fabric rather than blasting it. Then inspect. You are looking for tears, thin patches, fabric separating from the frame, and any spot where the weave has gone slack.

Then inspect the hardware. The manifold that sits on top cracks, and a crack there dumps DE straight back into the pool. The standpipe o ring at the bottom is a classic failure. The air relief tube, the clamp band and the tank o ring all get looked at while the tank is open. Then soak the grids if they need it. Degrease first for oils, then a dilute acid soak only if there is calcium, and never acid before degreasing.

Why does DE come back into the pool?

A torn grid, most commonly. Even a small tear passes a steady trickle, and the owner sees a fine white dust settling on the pool floor near the returns after every recharge.

A cracked manifold or a missing standpipe o ring, which lets DE bypass the grids entirely. This one usually shows up as a heavy plume immediately on startup rather than a slow dusting.

A backwash valve not fully seated, or a worn spider gasket on a multiport, which lets water and DE take the wrong path.

Or the simplest one: too much DE added, or added too fast. Dumping the whole charge into the skimmer in one go can push a slug past the grids before the coating establishes. Add it slowly, with the pump running, over a couple of minutes.

How much DE goes back in, and how?

By the filter size, which is printed on the label as a square footage. The usual rule of thumb is about one pound of DE per ten square feet of grid area, and the manufacturer label on the tank is the authority over any rule of thumb.

Mix it into a bucket of water first to a slurry, then pour it slowly into the skimmer with the pump running. Adding dry powder straight into a skimmer is how you get a clump that does not distribute.

After a teardown, some technicians add slightly less than the full charge, run for a day, then top up based on where the pressure settles. That avoids overcharging a freshly cleaned grid set.

Wear a mask. DE powder is a respiratory irritant and the silica content is a genuine health consideration, not a formality. Do not mix it in a cloud in a garage.

Where does the used DE go?

Not into the street and not into a storm drain. Backwash water carrying DE is a solids discharge and most cities here have rules about it. A separation tank on the pad, a backwash pit, or discharging onto a permeable area where the solids settle out are the usual answers.

Used DE from a teardown is a slurry and it belongs in the trash once the water has drained off it, not in a flower bed and not down a sink where it will settle in a trap and set.

If your pool is on a septic system, keep backwash water away from the field entirely. That much water in a short period causes problems that have nothing to do with the DE.

The North Texas part

DE handles our spring pollen better than any other filter type, and that is the main reason to own one here. Mountain cedar in midwinter and post oak and cedar elm from mid March into April both produce particles fine enough to pass a tired cartridge, and a DE grid set catches them. The price is that pollen season loads a DE filter fast, so spring means more frequent backwashing and recharging, and the annual teardown is best done at the end of that season rather than before it. Hard water is the other factor. Calcium works its way into grid fabric the same way it works into a cartridge, so a grid set here that has stiffened and lost flexibility is scaled, and it needs a degrease and then a dilute acid soak rather than replacement.

When to stop and call

A mechanically confident owner can do a DE teardown, and plenty do. It is heavier and fiddlier than a cartridge clean and the grid set is easy to damage on reassembly. Call when DE is returning to the pool and you cannot find the source, when the pressure will not come back to baseline after a full teardown, or if you would rather not spend an afternoon with a hose, a mask and a grid set.

How to take apart and recharge a DE filter, and whether you want to

This one is a fair amount of work. Learning how to take apart and recharge a DE filter means lifting a heavy tank half, handling grids that tear if you lean on them, and getting the manifold seated right on the way back. Plenty of homeowners do it well. Plenty of others crack a standpipe and spend more on the repair than the yearly service would have been.

Take a photo of the assembly before you pull anything out. That single step turns how to take apart and recharge a DE filter from a memory test into a reference. Lay the grids out in order too. Common questions

How often should a DE filter be torn down?

At least once a year, and twice if the pool works hard or sits under heavy tree cover. Backwash whenever the pressure rises eight to ten psi over baseline, but the annual teardown is what finds the torn grid.

Can I use a DE alternative?

Cellulose fiber alternatives exist and work in most DE filters. They avoid the silica dust concern and some owners prefer them. Check the filter manufacturer position and be aware you may need a different quantity than the DE charge.

The pressure spikes right after I recharge. What happened?

Usually too much DE, or DE added faster than the grids could take it, or grids that were not fully cleaned during the teardown. Backwash, recharge more slowly with a measured amount, and see where the pressure settles.

Do I have to backwash before opening the tank?

Yes, and drain the tank as well. It removes most of the DE and makes the job far less messy, and it lets you lift the grid set out without fighting a tank full of water.
