Why a green to clean takes more than one visit
A green to clean is a multi day job, not a single treatment. Day one kills the algae and the pool usually looks worse. The return visits redose chlorine as it is consumed, clean the filter as it loads, vacuum the settled debris, and confirm with an overnight chlorine loss test that nothing living remains.
What happens on day one, and why does the pool look worse?
Day one is debris removal, brushing every surface, a filter cleaning, a chemistry read including cyanuric acid, and the first heavy chlorine dose set against that stabilizer number. The pump goes to continuous.
By the next morning the pool has usually gone from green to gray or milky. That is a success. The algae is dead and the cells are suspended in the water, and they now have to be physically removed by the filter. Owners who expect clear water overnight read this as a failure, and it is the opposite.
What day one does not do is finish the job. Dead algae is still a load on the filter, the water is still consuming chlorine as it processes organic waste, and there is usually a layer of debris on the floor that has not been touched yet.
What actually happens on the return visits?
Redosing. Chlorine gets consumed fast in a recovering pool, and a level that was correct at six in the evening can be at zero by mid morning. Every hour at zero is an hour algae could restart. Holding the level, day after day, is the core of the work.
Filter cleaning, repeatedly. A cartridge that would normally run for months can load solid within hours during a recovery, and a loaded filter stops the process dead. Two or three cleanings across a recovery is normal, not a sign of anything going wrong.
Vacuuming. Once the water clears enough to see the floor, the settled material comes out, often to waste rather than through the filter, which means topping the water back up afterward.
And testing. Free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH held at the low end so the chlorine works, and eventually the overnight loss test that ends the job.
How is the job declared finished?
With an overnight chlorine loss test. Read free chlorine after sunset, read it again before sunrise, and compare. A loss of about a point or less with no sunlight involved means nothing in the pool is consuming chlorine, which means nothing is alive in there.
Combined chlorine should also be at or near zero. If it is still elevated, the pool is still working through organic waste and it is not done.
And the water has to be genuinely clear, not just less green. The standard is a clearly visible main drain from the deck, which is a safety threshold as much as a cosmetic one.
Once all three are true, chlorine comes back down to a normal target, the pump goes back to a normal schedule, and the pool goes onto a maintenance plan or back to the owner.
What makes a recovery need more visits than expected?
High cyanuric acid. If stabilizer is high, the chlorine level required to make progress is much higher, and if it is high enough, the honest answer is a partial water exchange before the recovery can work at all. That adds days.
A filter that is undersized or already worn. Recovery is a filtration job and a marginal filter turns three days into seven.
Debris volume. A pool that has been standing since last fall under post oaks has a floor of sludge that has to come out physically, and that is labor, not chemistry.
Dead spots and rough surfaces, where algae survives in corners the chemistry never fully reaches, which is also why a recovery includes daily brushing rather than a single scrub. This is why the band is $450 to $1,250+ rather than a single number. A light bloom caught in a week and a pool that has been dark since November are the same category of job at very different sizes.
What should happen after the pool is clear?
A stabilizer decision. If the recovery revealed high cyanuric acid, that number is still high, and it will make the next lapse worse. Address it while the pool is fresh in everybody mind rather than next August.
A phosphate read, if the pool has bloomed more than once. Not as a reflex purchase, but because a pool with a heavy nutrient load rebuilds a bloom faster after any future lapse.
A circulation look. If the same corner went green first, aim a return at it.
And a plan. Most repeat green pools are not chemistry failures, they are attention failures, and the honest options are a routine you will actually keep or a weekly service that keeps it for you.
How to tell which one you have
- Gray in the morning and green again by evening
- Chlorine is hitting zero during the day and the bloom restarts. The dose is right and the interval is wrong. On day two of a summer recovery that means dosing three times, not twice.
- Filter pressure has not moved in a full day
- Nothing is reaching the filter. Either the pump is too slow to carry particles, a valve is diverting flow, or the water is as clear as this filter can make it. Check flow before chemistry.
- You can see the drain but the water looks flat and dull
- Very fine particles are all that is left. This is the last stage and it clears with running time and a clean filter, sometimes helped by a clarifier. More chlorine now does nothing at all.
- Combined chlorine is stuck around one part per million
- The pool is still working through waste. Free chlorine can read fine while combined stays up. Hold the level and keep filtering, because a recovery is not finished while that number is elevated.
- The steps and the shaded wall go green first every time
- Those surfaces get the least flow and the least mixing. Recoveries fail there first, which is why brushing on every visit matters more than the size of any single chlorine dose.

Short version. Send heavy sludge to waste if your valve allows it, and top the pool up as you go. Once the floor is only lightly dusted, filtering it out is simpler and costs you no water at all.
What moves the price
A range is only honest if you can tell which end you are on. These are the things that decide it.

Putting the pump back on a schedule on day two
A recovery needs continuous flow, and an energy saving schedule leaves water sitting still for hours. Every still hour is progress lost. Go back to a normal schedule after the overnight test passes.
Vacuuming to waste without watching the water line
Sending debris to waste removes water fast. A pool dropped below the skimmer starves the pump, loses prime and risks the shaft seal, which stops the recovery. Run a hose while you vacuum.
Calling it finished because it looks clear
Clear water can still carry live algae that blooms again within a week. The overnight chlorine loss test is the only proof, and skipping it is why some pools get recovered twice in one month.
Refilling with hard fill water and walking away
Every gallon of makeup water carries calcium and alkalinity. After a recovery with heavy waste vacuuming the water is meaningfully different from where it started, so it needs a full retest.
Through a North Texas year

Our water. Recovery timelines here move with the calendar. In April a light bloom clears in two or three days. In August, with surface water above ninety degrees, the same pool consumes far more chlorine per day and needs dosing three or four times daily rather than twice, so the same job takes more product and more visits. Autumn brings the other complication: post oak, live oak and cedar elm drop steadily from October, so a recovery in fall is fighting a fresh debris load every night, and the filter cleanings come closer together. If a pool is going to be recovered, spring and fall cost less than August, and getting it done before the water goes past ninety degrees is worth scheduling around.
When to stop and call

Common questions
Why is my pool cloudy after the green is gone?
Because dead algae is still suspended in the water and the filter has to remove it. Cloudy after green is the middle of the recovery. Keep the pump running continuously and keep the filter clean and it clears.
Can the whole thing be done in one visit?
Rarely, and any quote that promises it is describing a very light bloom or leaving something out. The chlorine has to be held over days and the filter has to be cleaned as it loads. Both require somebody coming back.
Will the algae come back?
Only if the conditions that caused it are still there. High stabilizer, a loaded filter, weak circulation or a lapse in chlorine. A recovery that ends without addressing those is a recovery you will buy again.
Do I need to drain the pool first?
Usually not. Draining is a chemistry decision driven by stabilizer or hardness, not a response to color. Most green pools clear without draining, and draining leaves the algae on the walls anyway.
