Phosphate is algae food, not the cause of algae. Chlorine held at the right level kills algae regardless of phosphate. But heavy phosphate loading raises chlorine demand and lets a bloom rebuild fast after any lapse, so removal is worth doing on pools that keep re blooming with otherwise correct chemistry.

Do phosphates cause algae?

No. Algae needs phosphate the way a fire needs fuel, but a pool with an appropriate chlorine level will not bloom no matter how much phosphate is in it. Plenty of perfectly clear pools test high for phosphate and stay clear for years.

What phosphate does is remove a brake. In a pool with very low phosphate, a lapse in chlorine gives algae a slow start. In a pool loaded with phosphate, the same lapse gives it a running one. The difference between a Tuesday haze and a Thursday green pool is often exactly this.

So the honest framing is that phosphate is a risk multiplier. It does not decide whether you get algae. It decides how fast, and how badly, a mistake turns into a job.

Where does the phosphate come from?

Lawn fertilizer, first and by a distance. Phosphate is a headline ingredient, and a sprinkler that clips the pool or a storm that sheets a fertilized yard into the water delivers it directly.

Decaying organic matter, second. Leaves, catkins, pollen, insects, anything that sat in the water and broke down. A pool under mature oaks builds phosphate every autumn whether anybody fertilizes or not.

Fill water, third. Some municipal supplies use orthophosphate as a corrosion inhibitor in the distribution system, and if yours does, every top up is a small phosphate delivery.

And products, fourth, which surprises people. Some metal sequestrants are phosphonate based and break down into phosphate over time. So an owner treating a stain problem can be quietly feeding the algae problem, which is a genuinely annoying way to lose a summer.

Is a phosphate remover worth buying?

Sometimes, and the test decides. Get a phosphate reading before you buy anything. If the number is modest and your pool is clear and holding chlorine, you do not have a phosphate problem and the product is a donation.

If the number is high and you have re bloomed twice this season with chlorine that looked correct, then removal is a reasonable move. It buys you margin, which is exactly what a pool that keeps failing needs.

Circulation. Repeat blooms that always start in the same corner are a flow problem. No amount of phosphate removal fixes a return eye pointed at the wrong wall.

The filter. A loaded filter cannot remove what chlorine kills, and a pool that never fully clears is a pool that never fully recovered. If the pressure has been high since June, start there.

And the debris habit. Netting leaves out this week is phosphate that never enters the water next week. It is the cheapest phosphate control there is and nobody sells it.

How to test for phosphate, and when not to bother

Start with the units, because that is where most of the alarm comes from. Most phosphate tests read in parts per billion, not parts per million, so a result of 500 looks enormous next to a chlorine reading of 3 and is actually half of one part per million. Check which unit your kit or your store printout is using before you react to the size of the number.

Then think about timing. A sample pulled two days after a downpour tells you about the storm, not about your pool. The same goes for the week the lawn got fed. Wait until the water has run clear and settled for several days, then test, so the number you get is the load your pool carries all the time rather than a spike that is already on its way out.

Re routing a downspout, edging a bed higher than the deck or cutting a shallow swale keeps a storm from arriving as a nutrient delivery.
