Hot tub not bubbling: why the jets went weak
Weak or missing hot tub jets are usually a water and air problem rather than a pump failure. Low water level, a closed air control, a diverter turned away, a clogged filter, an airlock after a refill or a jet face closed by hand all produce the same symptom. Check those before the pump.
What makes the bubbles in a hot tub?
Two different systems, and knowing which one you are missing narrows the problem immediately. The jets themselves are driven by a pump pushing water through nozzles, and each nozzle has a small air line that draws air in as the water rushes past. That is a venturi, and it is what turns a stream of water into a stream of bubbles.
The second system is a blower, which some tubs have and some do not. A blower is a dedicated air pump that pushes air through a separate ring of small holes, usually in the footwell, producing a mass of fine bubbles with no water force behind them.
So a tub with strong water flow and no bubbles has an air problem in the venturi lines. A tub with weak flow overall has a water problem. And a tub that has lost the fine champagne bubbles from the floor while the jets still work has a blower problem.
Sorting the symptom into one of those three before you touch anything saves most of the diagnostic time.
Why did the jets go weak all at once?
Water level first, as always. A tub that has evaporated below the skimmer intake starts drawing air, and the pump loses its solid column of water. Jets go weak and surge, and the fix is a hose.
The filter second. Spa filters load with body oils, lotion and cosmetics far faster than pool filters load with leaves, and a spa filter that has not been rinsed in two months can restrict flow enough to soften every jet in the tub. The free test is to run the tub briefly with the filter removed. If the jets come back, you found it.
Then the air controls, which are the round knobs on the top rim. Those open and close the air supply to groups of jets, and they get closed accidentally, they get closed deliberately during a quiet soak and forgotten, and they seize with scale so they no longer open fully.
Then the diverter, which is the larger handle that splits flow between groups of jets. A diverter halfway between positions gives you half power everywhere, which reads as a tub that has gone weak rather than a tub that has been misconfigured.
Why do some jets work and others do not?
Because most tubs group jets into zones and the diverter chooses between them. That is by design, and on many tubs it is genuinely impossible to run every jet at full strength at once. If half your tub is strong and half is weak, turn the diverter and see whether the strength moves.
Individual jet faces are the other cause. Most jet internals rotate to open and close, and they get turned by a shoulder or a foot without anybody noticing. A single dead jet in an otherwise healthy tub is usually a jet somebody closed.
Then there is scale and debris inside the jet internals. In hard water the small passages inside a jet body accumulate calcium, and the internal bearing on a rotating jet stops spinning. Jet internals are replaceable parts and they are one of the cheaper repairs on a spa.
And finally an air line that has come loose or been pinched behind the cabinet, which kills the bubbles on one group while the water flow stays normal.
What is an airlock and how does it happen?
An airlock is a pocket of trapped air in the pump or the plumbing that stops water from moving. The pump spins, and it is spinning against air it cannot push, so it moves nothing.
It happens most often right after a drain and refill, which is why a tub that worked perfectly last week and does nothing after a water change is very likely airlocked rather than broken. Filling through the filter well rather than over the top reduces the chance considerably, because it pushes water into the plumbing rather than trapping air in it.
The classic symptom is a pump that runs with a different sound, no jet action at all, and often a heater that will not fire because there is no flow to prove.
Clearing one usually involves bleeding air out at the pump union or briefly loosening a fitting to let the air escape, which is manufacturer specific and worth doing carefully. It is a common enough refill problem that it is worth asking about before assuming a pump failure.
When is it the pump or the blower?
When the water level is right, the filter is clean, the air controls are open, the diverter is set and the jets are still dead. At that point you have eliminated the easy causes and you are looking at equipment.
A pump that hums without moving water is either airlocked or has a failed capacitor or a seized impeller. A pump that makes no sound at all is electrical. A pump that has become much louder is failing mechanically and it is on a countdown.
A blower that has failed is usually silent where it used to be audible, and it is a distinct sound from the jet pump. Blowers also fail from water getting into them, which is what the check valve and the plumbing loop in the air line are there to prevent.
Any of those is a service call. A spa runs at 240 volts on most installations, the equipment lives in a damp cabinet, and the diagnosis involves opening that cabinet with power present.

Hard fill water is what turns a North Texas spa jet from a moving part into a stuck one. A spa is small, hot and constantly evaporating, which concentrates calcium faster than any pool does, and the tiny internal passages in a jet body are exactly the geometry that scale closes first. The other regional factor is the refill season. Most people drain and refill in spring and fall, and airlock calls cluster in exactly those weeks. When to stop and call
Water level, filter, air controls, diverter position and individual jet faces are all genuinely homeowner checks, they cost nothing and they solve a large share of these calls. Do them first. Call when those are all ruled out, when the tub has been airlocked since a refill and bleeding it has not worked, when the pump has changed its sound, or immediately if the breaker trips or anything smells hot. Spa equipment is high voltage sitting in a damp cabinet next to water, and that is where the homeowner portion ends.

Open the air controls all the way and listen. On most tubs they are the small knobs on the rim, and they get closed by an elbow and left that way for months. That is the air side rather than the water side. Check the air control knobs on the rim first, then look for a pinched or disconnected air line. Strong water with no air is a venturi problem, and it does not involve the pump at all.
Should I run the jets every day?
Running the tub regularly is genuinely good for it. Water and sanitizer moving through the jet plumbing discourages the biofilm that builds in the pipes of a tub that mostly sits, and stagnant plumbing is a real cause of cloudy water and odor later.
