Spa jets and blowers: how they work and how they fail
A jet pump pushes water through nozzles that draw in air through a venturi. A blower is a separate air pump feeding a ring of small holes, usually in the footwell. Jets fail from scale and worn internals. Blowers fail from motor wear and from water getting back into the air line.
What is the difference between a jet pump and a blower?
A jet pump moves water. It pulls from the suction fittings, pushes through the manifolds and out of the jet nozzles, and the force you feel on your back is water. Air gets added at each jet through a small venturi line, which is why the water arrives as bubbles rather than as a stream.
A blower moves air and nothing else. It is a separate motor with an impeller that pushes air through a dedicated manifold to a ring of small holes, usually along the footwell, and it produces a broad mass of fine bubbles with no massage force behind it.
They sound different and that is diagnostically useful. A jet pump is a lower pitched water sound. A blower is a higher pitched airy whir, and on most tubs it is noticeably louder in a different way.
Not every tub has a blower, and on units that do not, the fine bubbles you may be missing were never there. Knowing which equipment your tub actually has prevents a lot of unnecessary worry.
What is inside a jet and what wears out?
Most jets are two parts: a jet body glued into the shell, with water and air lines plumbed to it, and a removable internal that twists into place. The internal is what you can see and what carries all the moving parts.
Rotating jet internals have a small ball or nozzle riding on a bearing surface, and that bearing is the wear item. It runs constantly in hot chemically treated water, so it wears smooth, it gets stiff, and eventually it stops spinning.
Scale is the accelerant. Calcium deposits build in the tight passages and around the bearing, and a jet in hard water can seize years before the same jet in soft water would. That is the single most common jet failure in North Texas.
The good news is that internals are replaceable parts and the swap is straightforward on most tubs. The jet body glued into the shell is the part you never want to have to replace, and that is why forcing a stuck internal with tools is a bad idea.
Why do jets squeal or grind?
A squeal from a single jet is usually the bearing in that rotating internal running dry of its natural lubrication, which is to say worn. It is annoying rather than dangerous, and it is a replaceable part.
A grinding or grating sound from a jet often means debris or scale in the internal, and sometimes a cracked internal spinning against its seat. Removing and inspecting it usually answers the question in a minute.
A whine or growl from the equipment bay rather than from the water is a different problem entirely and it belongs to the pump. Bearings in a spa pump behave the same way as bearings in a pool pump, which is to say they only get worse.
A rattling or surging noise with weak jets across the whole tub is air, not a jet fault. That points at water level, the filter, or an airlock, and it is worth checking those before pulling anything apart.
Why does a blower push cold air into the water?
Because that is what it is doing. A blower draws air from around the equipment bay and pushes it into the water, and on a cold night that air is cold. Running a blower in January measurably cools a tub, which surprises people who expect bubbles to feel warm.
Some units include a small heating element in the blower to take the edge off, and some do not. Either way, extended blower use in cold weather costs you water temperature and the heater has to make it back.
The related fault is a blower that has stopped working at all, which is usually the motor. Blowers are hard working small motors in a damp environment, and they are a wear item over the life of a tub.
A blower that has become much louder or is making a rougher sound is telling you the same thing any small motor tells you, and it deserves attention before it seizes.
Why does the blower need a check valve and a loop?
Because water must never reach the blower motor, and water in a spa is under pressure while the jets run. The air line from a blower is plumbed with a loop that rises above the water line and usually a check valve as well, so that water cannot travel back down the pipe into the equipment.
When that protection fails, water gets into the blower, and a blower full of water is a dead blower and potentially an electrical fault. It is one of the more common ways these components are lost.
The same principle applies to the venturi air lines feeding the jets, which are also routed up and over before they drop to the manifold. Any plumbing modification in a spa cabinet that flattens one of those loops creates the same risk.
This is a good reason to leave spa cabinet plumbing to somebody who knows what each loop is for. A line that looks like an unnecessary detour is very often the thing preventing an expensive failure.
The North Texas part
Hard water is what ends jets in this region, and it does it faster than owners expect. A spa concentrates calcium quickly because it is small, hot and constantly evaporating, and the internal passages and bearing surfaces inside a jet are exactly the geometry that scale closes first. Jets that will not rotate, air controls that will not turn and a heater element that has slowed down are usually the same problem showing up in three places, which is why a hard water conversation in this county is a spa longevity conversation. Freeze is the other regional factor and it reaches the blower specifically. That air line loop is full of air in normal operation, but a tub drained carelessly or left without power on a hard freeze night can trap water in places the design never intended, and blower plumbing is not built to survive ice.
When to stop and call
Removing and inspecting a jet internal, checking water level, cleaning the filter and identifying which sound is coming from where are all reasonable homeowner tasks. Call before forcing a seized jet internal, because the jet body behind it is glued into the shell and replacing that is a far larger job. Call for anything in the equipment bay, including blower replacement and any pump noise, since spa equipment runs at 240 volts in a damp cabinet and a blower that has taken on water is an electrical fault as well as a mechanical one.

Knowing how spa jets and blowers work changes what you turn on. The blower is a heater in reverse: it pushes room temperature air into hot water and cools it while it runs. If your spa struggles to hold temperature on a January evening with everything switched on, that is why. Use the blower for the few minutes you want the froth, not for the whole soak.
The other half of how spa jets and blowers work is the check valve above the blower. It stops water backing up into the motor, and when it fails the damage is quick and expensive. If you ever hear water where air should be, switch the blower off and call. Jet internals are a different story. Those are a wear part in hard water and a fair job to replace yourself.
Common questions
Can I replace jet internals myself?
On most tubs yes, since they twist out and twist back in, and matching the part to the model is the main difficulty. The rule is to stop if it will not come out with reasonable hand pressure, because the body behind it is bonded into the shell and that is not a repair you want to cause.
Should I run the blower every time?
It is a preference rather than a maintenance requirement, and in cold weather it costs you water temperature. Some owners love the sensation and use it constantly. What is worth avoiding is running it for long stretches on a cold night and then wondering why the tub is struggling to hold temperature.
Why is one jet always weaker than the rest?
Check whether it is closed, since most internals rotate shut. Then check the diverter, since that jet may be on a zone getting less flow. Then suspect scale in the internal. Those three cover almost every single weak jet.
