Swim spa jets, heat and what it costs to run
A swim spa is a long tank with a propulsion system at one end, so it behaves like neither a pool nor a hot tub. It holds far more water than a spa, loses heat over a much larger surface, and the swim current is produced by dedicated high volume pumps rather than ordinary jets.
How is a swim spa different from a hot tub?
Volume first. A swim spa holds several times the water of a hot tub, which changes everything downstream. It takes far longer to heat, it is far more expensive to hold at temperature, and its chemistry is more forgiving because the bather load per gallon is much lower.
Surface area second, and this is the one people underestimate. Heat leaves water primarily through the surface, and a swim spa has a large one. That is why the cover on a swim spa matters more than the cover on a hot tub, and why a poor cover costs real money every month.

What makes the swim current, and what weakens it?
On most units, dedicated high volume pumps feeding large nozzles at one end, sometimes through a chamber that smooths the flow into a broad current rather than a set of jets. Some designs use a paddle wheel or a propeller assembly instead, which produces a wider and gentler current.
What weakens it is the same list as any jet system, starting with flow. A loaded filter is the first cause and the easiest to fix. A low water level is the second. An air control left open in a nozzle designed to run without air is the third.
Then the nozzle assemblies themselves, which are adjustable on most units and get knocked out of alignment. A current that has become turbulent or one sided is usually aim rather than power.

Why does a swim spa take so long to heat?
Because it is a lot of water and the heater is sized like a spa heater rather than a pool heater. Raising several thousand gallons by twenty degrees is a job measured in a day or more, not an evening, and no setting on the panel changes that arithmetic.
This is why a swim spa is run as a hold rather than a heat up. You pick a temperature, you keep it there, and you keep it covered. Letting it cool between uses and reheating for each session costs far more than holding it, and it means waiting a day every time.
The cover is the largest single variable in that holding cost. An uncovered swim spa loses heat to evaporation continuously, and evaporation carries away far more energy than conduction through the shell. A waterlogged, sagging or ill fitting cover on a swim spa is an expensive thing to tolerate.
Placement matters too. A unit in a windy open yard loses heat faster than the same unit with a windbreak, because moving air accelerates evaporation off the surface.
What does it cost to run through a Texas year?
It splits by season, and North Texas gives you a genuinely favorable middle. Spring and fall are the cheapest months to hold a swim spa at exercise temperature, because the air is mild and the gap between water and air is small.
Summer flips the problem. From June through early September the difficulty here is often keeping a swim spa cool enough to exercise in rather than warm enough, particularly on a unit sitting in full sun. Shade, a cover used during the day to block solar gain, and running the pumps in the cool of the night all help, and some owners simply accept warmer water for a few weeks.
Winter is where the bill lives. Holding a large surface of water at exercise temperature through a run of thirty degree nights takes real energy, and this is the season where cover condition, wind exposure and a well insulated cabinet pay for themselves.
The one non negotiable through winter is freeze protection. A swim spa is a large volume of water with a lot of plumbing, and in this climate that means confirming freeze settings and keeping power to it through cold snaps.
What maintenance does the swim end need that a spa does not?
Filtration sized for the volume. A swim spa needs more filter capacity and more circulation hours than a hot tub, and running it on a hot tub schedule leaves the water underfiltered. Multiple cartridges are common and all of them need the same rotation and soaking routine.
Attention to the propulsion pumps, which are the hardest working components on the unit. Noise changes, reduced current and any change in how quickly they come up to speed are worth reporting early rather than late.
Chemistry adjusted for the temperature you actually run. Water held at exercise temperature consumes sanitizer more slowly than hot tub water, which means it is easier to keep but also easier to neglect, and a swim spa left unsanitized for a fortnight because it seemed fine develops the same problems any body of water does.

A swim spa suits this climate better than most places, and the reason is our long shoulder seasons. March through May and September through November are close to ideal for holding one at exercise temperature, and that is a lot of usable months. The two ends of the year each bring a specific local problem. In July and August the difficulty here is heat gain rather than heat loss, since a unit in full sun in hundred degree weather can drift above comfortable exercise temperature on its own, and shade or a daytime cover becomes a cooling strategy rather than a heating one. In December through February the concern is freeze, and a swim spa holds a large volume of water in a lot of plumbing. Confirm freeze protection before the first front, keep power to the unit through cold snaps, and know how the equipment would be drained if the grid went down for a day.
When to stop and call
Cleaning filters, adjusting nozzle aim, testing water and managing the cover are all owner tasks and they cover most of what a swim spa needs. Call for propulsion pump service, for any heating problem that survives a filter clean and a cover check, and for freeze protection setup before winter. Call rather than investigate anything inside the equipment bay, since these units run 240 volt equipment in a damp cabinet and the diagnosis happens with power present.
How much does a swim spa cost to run through a North Texas year
The cover decides most of it. A swim spa loses heat from a big open surface, and a worn cover that has soaked up water is both heavy and useless. Do dual zone models really work?
They do, and they are two separate bodies of water with separate heating, which means two sets of chemistry to maintain and more equipment to service. The convenience is real and so is the added maintenance.
How often does a swim spa need draining?
Less often than a hot tub, because the bather load per gallon is much lower and the temperature is usually lower too. The same signals apply: sanitizer that will not hold, chemistry that resists correction, and water that no longer feels clean.
