A gas heater makes heat by burning fuel, so it works in any weather and raises temperature fast. A heat pump moves heat from the air, so it costs far less per degree but slows down as the air cools. Gas suits spas and cold snaps. Heat pumps suit long season swimming.

How does each type actually make heat?

A gas heater burns natural gas or propane under a heat exchanger and passes pool water through it. It is a combustion appliance, and its output does not care what the weather is doing. On a thirty degree night it produces the same heat it produces in June.

A heat pump makes no heat at all. It runs a refrigeration cycle backwards, pulling low grade warmth out of the outside air and concentrating it into the pool water. Because it is moving heat rather than creating it, it delivers several units of heat for every unit of electricity, which is where the running cost advantage comes from.

The consequence of that difference sits in the air temperature. A heat pump has plenty of ambient heat to harvest at eighty degrees and very little at forty, so its output falls exactly when you want it most. Below roughly the fifties, most residential units slow dramatically, and near freezing they stop being useful.

Which one heats faster?

Gas, decisively, and it is not a close comparison. A gas heater delivers a large amount of heat per hour on demand, which means a spa can go from ambient to a hundred and two degrees in well under an hour on most systems.

A heat pump delivers heat slowly and steadily. It is measured in degrees per day on a pool rather than degrees per hour, and it works by holding a temperature rather than reaching one. Asking a heat pump to warm a cold pool for a weekend guest is asking it to do the thing it is worst at.

This is the single clearest decision rule. If you want on demand heat, particularly for a spa you use at short notice on a cold evening, you want gas. If you want a pool that is simply warm all season without thinking about it, you want a heat pump.

A meaningful number of North Texas pads with an attached spa end up with both, running gas for the spa and a heat pump for the pool. That is a real configuration, not a sales pitch, and it exists because the two appliances answer different questions.

Which one costs less to run?

A heat pump, substantially, per degree of pool temperature, as long as the air is warm enough for it to work. Moving heat is far cheaper than making it, and over a long shoulder season that gap compounds into a genuinely different utility bill.

Gas costs more per degree but you only pay it when you use it. For a household that heats a spa twenty evenings a year and never heats the pool, a gas heater may cost less in a year than a heat pump that runs for weeks, simply because it spends most of the year switched off.

The other cost that people forget is the pump. A heat pump only works while water is flowing through it, which means your filter pump runs during every heating hour. On a pool that would otherwise run a short low speed schedule, the heating season adds pump hours as well as compressor hours.

Neither appliance is cheap to install correctly. Gas needs a correctly sized gas line and venting clearances. A heat pump needs adequate electrical supply and a lot of clear air around it. Both belong on a written quote after somebody has looked at the pad.

Which fits a North Texas swim season?

Our summer does not need a heater at all. From June through early September, a North Texas pool is warm without help and the more common complaint is water that will not cool down.

The value lives in the shoulders. March, April, October and November are the months where a heater turns a pool that is technically usable into one that people actually get into, and those are also months where the air is often in the sixties and seventies during the day. That is heat pump weather.

Winter is a different question. December through February brings real cold, occasional hard freezes, and air temperatures where a heat pump has nothing to work with. A household that wants a hot spa in January wants gas.

So the honest North Texas answer usually depends on whether you are heating a pool or a spa. Pools benefit most from a heat pump extending the shoulder season. Spas benefit most from gas making heat available on a cold night at short notice.

What breaks on each one?

Gas heaters fail at the gas train and the exchanger. Ignition components, flame sensors, gas valves, pressure switches and scaled or corroded heat exchangers are the repair list, along with the insect nests and rodent damage that come from sitting idle for eight months in an outdoor cabinet.

Heat pumps fail as refrigeration equipment. Refrigerant leaks, failing compressors, fan motors, contactors and control boards are the list, plus the titanium exchanger and its water side. They also lose performance quietly from a coil packed with cottonwood, grass clippings and dust, which is a maintenance item rather than a fault.

Both have a common enemy here, and it is the freeze. Any heater with water sitting in it during a hard freeze can split a header or an exchanger, and that is a large repair on either machine. Freeze protection on a heater is not optional in this region.

One difference worth knowing before you buy: gas heater parts are widely stocked and broadly interchangeable within a brand family, while heat pump repairs more often need refrigerant handling and specific parts. That affects how quickly a failure gets fixed in the middle of a busy season.

How to tell which one you have

The heat pump runs all night and gains three degrees
The air is too cold for it to harvest much heat. That is the machine working as designed rather than a fault. Below roughly 50 degrees, output falls sharply on most residential units.
The gas bill jumps more than your pool use explains
The heater is running longer than you think, usually because an uncovered pool loses heat overnight. Evaporation off an open surface is the largest single heat loss on any pool anywhere.
The spa takes two hours to reach temperature
Either the heater is undersized for the spa volume, or a bypass valve is routing part of the flow around it. A correctly sized gas heater brings most spas up in well under an hour.
The heat pump coil is packed with grass and cottonwood
It cannot breathe, so it cannot harvest heat. Output falls quietly while the compressor works harder. This is a maintenance item that gets mistaken for a failing unit every single spring.
The pool warms all day and is cold again by morning
You are heating the night air, and no appliance wins that. A cover is worth more than the difference between the two heater types, because most loss happens at the surface after dark.

Short version. If you want a warm pool in March and October, a heat pump earns its money. If you want a hot spa on a January evening, gas is the only one that will do it, and plenty of pads here end up with both.

What moves the price

A range is only honest if you can tell which end you are on. These are the things that decide it.

What people get wrong here

  • Sizing a heat pump to the temperature you want in June

    The months you actually need it are the cool ones. A unit sized for summer crawls in March and October, which are exactly the months that justify buying it. Size for the shoulder season instead.

  • Putting a heat pump against a wall or in a corner

    It needs a large volume of air moving through it and it dumps cold air out the other side. Boxed in, it re breathes its own exhaust and output collapses. Clearance is a performance requirement.

  • Running gas to a pool without checking meter capacity

    A pool heater is often the largest gas appliance at the house. If the meter and line cannot supply it alongside the furnace and water heater, it starves and locks out on exactly the coldest evenings.

  • Buying either one with no freeze plan

    Both hold water and both split in a hard freeze. The plan has to include what happens during a power outage, because freeze protection that depends on circulation does nothing when the grid is down.

Through a North Texas year

  1. March and AprilPrime heat pump weather. Daytime air in the sixties and seventies gives the unit plenty to harvest, and a covered pool holds overnight what it gained during the day.

Our water. The North Texas climate splits this decision cleanly. Our shoulder seasons are long and mild, which is where heat pumps earn their money, and our summers are hot enough that pools frequently need no heat at all from June to September. Against that, we get short violent cold snaps where the air drops into the twenties for two or three days, and during those exact days a heat pump is nearly useless while a spa owner very much wants hot water. There is also a hard water dimension. Scale lands on hot surfaces regardless of what makes them hot, so a titanium heat pump exchanger and a copper gas exchanger both accumulate calcium in our fill water, and both benefit from pH being held down. Whichever you choose, plan freeze protection for it before the first cold front rather than after.

When to stop and call

Comparing the two on paper is something you can do yourself, and this guide is meant to make that possible. Call before purchase, because sizing is where these decisions go wrong: an undersized heat pump never catches up and an oversized gas heater short cycles. Call for any repair on either, because one is a gas appliance and the other is sealed refrigeration equipment, and neither is homeowner territory once the panels come off.

Write down when you actually want to swim before anyone quotes you. Heat pump or gas heater for a pool is a different question for someone who wants April through October than for someone who wants a warm spa in January. Be honest about it, including the years you did not swim much. People buy for the schedule they imagine and then pay to run it for the one they have.

Check what your house can actually supply. A heat pump needs a dedicated circuit and clear air on all sides. Gas needs a line big enough to feed it, and an undersized run is a common surprise on older Flower Mound properties. Common questions

Can a heat pump keep a spa hot in January?

Generally not in a way you will enjoy. With air temperatures in the thirties and forties there is very little heat available to harvest, so the unit runs long and delivers little. Spas used in real winter are a gas application in this region.

Does a solar cover matter with either one?

It matters enormously with both, and more than most equipment decisions. The majority of pool heat loss is evaporation off the surface, so covering the water at night keeps far more heat than any efficiency difference between the two appliances.

Is a heat pump noisy?

It runs like an outdoor air conditioner, because that is essentially what it is. There is a fan and a compressor, and it runs for long stretches rather than short ones. Placement relative to bedrooms and patios is worth thinking about before installation rather than after.

Can I add a heat pump to a pad that already has a gas heater?

Often yes, and it is a common upgrade. The two are plumbed in series with the water passing through both, and the automation decides which one runs. It needs adequate electrical capacity and space, so it starts with somebody looking at the pad.
