Why a gas pool heater will not fire

A gas pool heater refuses to fire when any link in its safety chain fails. It needs adequate flow through the pressure switch, gas at the right pressure, ignition, a proven flame, and every limit switch closed. Most no heat calls are flow or gas supply rather than a failed heater.

What has to happen before a pool heater fires?

A gas heater will not light until it has been given a series of permissions in order, and it checks every one of them every time. There is a call for heat from the thermostat or the automation panel. There is adequate water flow, proven by a pressure switch or flow switch. There is gas available at the correct pressure at the valve. There is a working igniter. And every high limit and rollout switch is closed.

Any one of those failing produces the same visible result: a heater that does nothing, or a heater that tries and then gives up. That is why the symptom is so uninformative on its own and why the fault code matters so much.

The reason for all those permissions is that a gas appliance sitting outdoors next to water has a lot of ways to hurt somebody. Every switch in that chain exists because something bad happened once. A heater that refuses to fire is usually working exactly as designed.

Why does the heater try and then lock out?

A heater that clicks, hums, sparks and then shuts down has usually failed at flame proving. The igniter fired but the control could not confirm a stable flame, so it shut the gas off and locked out. That points at gas supply, the gas valve, the flame sensor, or a burner tray that is fouled.

Gas supply is the underrated cause. A heater is often the largest gas appliance at the house, and it can be starved by an undersized line, a partly closed valve, a regulator that has drifted, or simply by the pool heater, the water heater and the range all being asked at once. A heater that fires fine in the morning and locks out in the evening is worth checking against what else in the house is running.

The other common lockout is the pressure switch, which sits in the water side and proves flow. If flow is marginal, the switch chatters, the heater lights, the switch opens, and the heater shuts down. That presents as a heater that runs for a few seconds or a few minutes and then quits, over and over.

A heater that locks out on a high limit is telling you the water leaving it is too hot, which is nearly always a flow problem or a scaled heat exchanger rather than a thermostat set too high.

What can a homeowner check safely?

The things that are not gas and not inside the cabinet. Check that the filter is clean and the pump is moving water at the rate the heater expects, because inadequate flow is the most common single cause of no heat. Check that valves are set the way the heater needs them, particularly on a pad with a spa.

Check the obvious supply items you can see without opening anything. Is the gas shutoff at the heater in the open position. Is the breaker for the heater on. Is the automation panel actually calling for heat rather than sitting in a mode that has the heater disabled.

Write down the exact fault code and the model. That single piece of information is the difference between a technician arriving with the right part and a technician arriving to look.

What you should not do is open the gas train, adjust the gas valve, bypass a limit switch or jumper a pressure switch. Those switches are the only thing standing between a gas appliance and an event, and there are videos online showing exactly how to defeat them. Do not.

What do the common fault codes point at?

Codes vary between Raypak, Pentair, Hayward and Jandy units, but they sort into the same families. A flow or pressure switch code means the heater is not seeing enough water. Start at the filter, the pump speed and the valve positions.

An ignition failure or flame failure code means it tried and could not prove a flame. That is gas supply, the igniter, the flame sensor or a fouled burner. This one is a technician job because everything in that list is inside the gas path.

A high limit code means the water in the exchanger got too hot. Flow again, or scale insulating the exchanger tubes so the water immediately around them overheats while the pool stays cold.

A sensor or thermistor code means the heater is not measuring water temperature correctly. Sometimes that is a genuinely failed sensor, and sometimes it is a sensor sitting in a fitting packed with scale, which is a slow reader rather than a dead one.

Why do heaters fail on the first cold morning?

Because that is the first time all year they have been asked to do anything. A pool heater in North Texas may sit unused from May until October, and eight months of standing still in an outdoor cabinet is hard on a machine.

Three things happen during that idle stretch. Insects build nests in burner tubes and venturis, which is a genuinely common cause of ignition failure here. Moisture and condensation corrode contacts and sensor terminals. And rodents find the cabinet an appealing place to be, with predictable results for the wiring.

That is why a heater is worth firing once in the shoulder season rather than discovering the problem on the first cold night when you actually want it. A five minute test run in late September finds the failure while there is time to fix it.

How to tell which one you have

The display lights up but raising the setpoint does nothing
The heater is not receiving a call for heat, or it believes the water is already warm enough. Check the automation mode, then check the temperature it reports against a thermometer in the pool.
The blower runs and stops after about thirty seconds
It began its sequence and failed a check before ignition, which usually means a pressure switch or an air proving fault rather than the burner. Note whether it retries or locks out immediately.
It fires normally and the pool temperature never moves
It is heating and not enough. That points at short cycling, a scaled exchanger, a bypass valve sending most of the flow around the heater, or a unit undersized for the volume it serves.

Something inside the water path is leaking, and that water lands on burners and controls. Shut it down. A leaking exchanger is a large repair and a soaked control board is a larger one.

The first is hard fill water, which puts scale inside the heat exchanger and drives high limit lockouts on a heater that was healthy two seasons ago. The second is the freeze pattern, where a mild December leaves everybody relaxed and a two day hard freeze cracks a header or a bypass fitting that nobody drained.
