Metal stains on pool plaster and where they come from
Metal stains are iron, copper or manganese coming out of solution onto plaster. Iron reads rust brown, copper reads blue green or black, manganese reads purple black. A chlorine tablet held on the spot lightens organic stains and does nothing to metal, which is the fastest way to tell them apart.
How do you tell a metal stain from an organic one?
Hold a chlorine tablet against the stain for about thirty seconds and lift it. If the spot lightens, the stain is organic, meaning a leaf, an acorn, a worm or algae residue, and chlorine will handle it. If nothing happens, it is very likely metal.
Then run the second test. Hold a crushed vitamin C tablet, ascorbic acid, against the spot for the same half minute. If that lightens it, you have a metal stain, and probably iron. This pair of tests takes two minutes and it decides everything that follows.
Color helps but it is not conclusive on its own. Iron is rust brown to reddish. Copper is blue green, teal, or nearly black where it is heavy. Manganese is purple black or dark brown and often appears in blotches. Cobalt spotting on some plaster looks like dark blue grey freckles and is a surface defect rather than a stain at all.
Doing this before you buy anything matters, because throwing a metal treatment at an organic stain accomplishes nothing, and throwing chlorine at a metal stain can set it darker.
Where does the metal come from?
Fill water, especially well water. Iron and manganese in a well supply arrive dissolved, and the moment they meet chlorinated water they oxidize and settle onto the plaster. Anybody topping a pool from a well should be adding sequestrant to the hose water as a matter of routine.
The heater, for copper. A copper heat exchanger sitting in water that has been allowed to run acidic will give up copper into the pool, and it will do that quietly for months. Blue green staining with no other explanation is a strong reason to look at the heater and at your pH history.
Copper based algaecides and ionizers, which put copper into the water deliberately. They work, and the price is that the copper never leaves and will eventually stain if pH swings.
And objects. A hairpin, a nail, a soda can, a wire tie, a piece of pool cleaner hardware left resting on a step for a week. Those produce a small, sharply defined rust spot exactly where the object sat, and they are the easiest of all these to diagnose.
How is a metal stain actually removed?
The common approach for iron is an ascorbic acid treatment, and the sequence matters more than the product. Free chlorine has to come down close to zero first, because chlorine and ascorbic acid fight each other. Then the ascorbic acid goes in, the stain releases into the water, and the pool is left with dissolved metal floating around in it.
Which is why the next step is not optional. A sequestrant goes in immediately to hold that metal in solution so it does not simply fall back onto the plaster. Then chlorine gets brought back up slowly, over days rather than hours, because a fast chlorine spike will re oxidize the metal and re stain the pool. That is the classic way this treatment fails.
For copper staining, the approach is similar but the sequestrant choice matters more and results are less predictable. Heavy copper stains, and manganese stains, are often a job for a specific stain removal product matched to the metal rather than a generic vitamin C treatment.
And afterward, the sequestrant becomes a routine. It breaks down under sun and chlorine, so it gets redosed on a schedule. A pool that had a metal problem once has metal in the water forever unless the water leaves.
When is dilution the better answer?
When the metal is in the water rather than just on the walls. Removing a stain puts the metal back into the water column, and if the concentration is high, you are now managing it with sequestrant indefinitely.
A partial water exchange lowers the metal concentration the same way it lowers stabilizer and hardness, proportionally. On a pool that has been topped off from a well for years, that is often the honest fix, and the stain treatment afterward has a much better chance of holding.
It is also the right call when a stain treatment has already been done once and the stain came back within a season. That pattern means the metal is still in the water and the sequestrant either was not maintained or was not enough.
How do you keep it from happening again?
Never let pH run low for long. Low pH is what pulls copper out of a heater and what makes water aggressive toward metal in general. This one habit prevents most copper staining.
Add sequestrant when filling or topping up if your source water carries metal, and especially on well water. It is cheap insurance and it goes in before the water does.
Skip copper algaecides on a pool that has ever stained. There are copper free polymer algaecides that do the same preventive job without adding a metal you cannot remove.
And keep metal objects out of the pool, which sounds obvious right up until somebody drops a bobby pin on the top step in June and finds a rust spot in July.
The North Texas part
Plenty of homes on the rural edges of this service area, out toward Argyle, Bartonville, Justin and Ponder, are on well water or use a well for irrigation and top ups even when the house is on city water. That well water is often iron bearing, and a summer of topping off an evaporating pool with it lays down a brown film that owners mistake for dirt. Add our hard fill water and the high pH that comes with a salt system and you get metal precipitating exactly when the water is most saturated. The other local trigger is the freeze cycle. A hard freeze after a mild winter sends pH and chemistry sideways in a hurry, and pools that come out of a freeze event with a heater that ran acidic for a week often show copper staining by spring.
When to stop and call
A single small spot from a dropped object is a homeowner job with a vitamin C tablet and ten minutes. A whole wall, a floor blotched with iron, or any copper staining is not, because the treatment requires dropping chlorine to zero, holding the pool there safely, and bringing it back without re staining. That is a sequence with a real cost of failure, and a failed attempt often makes the stain harder to remove the second time.

Run the two spot tests before you buy a product. Hold a chlorine tablet on the stain for half a minute. Organic stains lighten. Then try a vitamin C tablet on a different spot. Metal stains lighten. Find the source or you will do this again. Well water, a corroding heater, and cheap algaecide all put metal in. Common questions
Can I just scrub a metal stain off?
No. Metal stains are in the plaster surface, not on it, and scrubbing only polishes the plaster around them. Abrasives on plaster also open the surface up, which invites algae later.
Will a stain treatment work if I do not add sequestrant?
It will lift the stain and then put it right back within days. The sequestrant is what holds the released metal in solution while chlorine comes back up. Skipping it is the most common reason these treatments fail.
Is a metal stain harmful?
Not to swimmers at pool concentrations. It is a cosmetic and surface issue. The reason to take it seriously is that it usually points at a cause, such as an acidic heater or well water, that is worth fixing on its own.
My whole pool has a brown tint after a refill. What is that?
Very likely iron in the fill water oxidizing as it meets chlorine. Sequestrant plus filtration usually clears it. Adding a big chlorine dose first is how a brown tint becomes a brown floor.
